Tongues by Frazer Irving

'Tongues' by Frazer Irving

Digital futures

Frazer Irving, digital illustrator for Marvel Comics and 2000AD has an exhibition of his work open in Leeds.

One day, all art may be made this way!! Well, maybe not but there's no doubting that technology can play its part as part of the arsenal of weapons available to modern artists and designers.

Frazer Irving is one such artist, his work is entirely digital, as he uses the Cintiq - a flat object on which you can paint digital images much as if you were painting on canvas - you can even use a brush to get the desired effect. Indeed, his entire studio consists of his Cintiq and his laptop. Such technology has helped put him at the top of his game, in the world of comics and graphic novels.

Frazer was born and brought up in Ilford, Essex (which may or may not have influenced his dark imagery!!) and attended Portsmouth University, after which he honed his art for five years in the rarified atmosphere of the Royal Academy...although Irving was working there as a security guard, allowing him ample time to perfect his artistic vision.

Pretty soon, he was on his way as one of Britain's top comics, 2000AD, took him on and his series 'Necronauts' became a popular staple of the comic's roster. Since then, he's worked for comic industry giant Marvel as well as doing illustration work for various companies in the role-playing games field and flash animation for advertising agencies.

Now, Irving has checked back through his portfolio and selected a wide range of his recent work to put on show in a new exhibition in Leeds.

Frazer Irving has his work on display at Leeds College of Art, Blenheim Walk, Leeds LS2 from Wednesday 6 May until Monday 15 June 2009.
