Terra Nullius

Terra Nullius is an exhibition of large scale digital prints and time-based projections, by the Leeds- born Jim Brogden, at the Round Foundry Media Centre in the Holbeck Urban Village.

The exhibition comes from a 3-year research project investigating a 5-mile 'inclusion zone'around the Royal Armouries in Leeds, showing the rapidly changing urban landscape.

Terra Nullius is a Latin legal phrase meaning 'empty land' or 'no man's land'. Interestingly, Jim says that the United Kingdom relied on this principle to first claim possession of Australia.

Jim feels the contemporary equivalent of a Terra Nullius can be found in the notion of the ‘non-place’.

These 'non-places' are familiar but abandoned places that people often avoid, like redundant industrial sites. Often it is unclear who owns the land and these areas have often been marginalised or cut off by new road building or other infrastructure. Some of the 'non-places' may yet be turned around and are on the verge of regeneration.

The exhibition is in the Round Foundry, Holbeck Until Friday 30th November 2007.
