I went to so many concerts and festivals it was starting to break the bank so I looked into other ways. Volunteering with the events team at Leeds Metropolitan University was a start, but when I happened upon a copy of the fanzine/local music mag Sandman back in early 2004 and they were looking for photographers and reviewers I thought "I can do that!" Unfortunately I had no experience what so ever at taking action photos or writing, other than essays at school. I had a job for two weeks taking infant pics for their parents, but it wasn't for me. So I met the editor and started from there. Currently I've covered bands from Gary Jules to Gary Numan, usually writing to go with the pictures (if no one reviews it... what's the point?). I started using a normal 4 million pixel digital camera with no zoom, cheap it was from Argos (and it wasn't mine!). This year I have splashed out and bought a Canon 350D, and now desperately need to save up and get a nice telephoto/wide lens. Hopefully I will be working at some summer festivals soon, so the expensive equipment will be worth it, as it is all voluntary but fun! |
