Cheryl Baker in Canterbury

Cheryl Baker in Canterbury

Canterbury film archive

Cheryl Baker has been looking at some extraordinary film footage showing Canterbury as it was in 1923, before the WWII bombs destroyed so much of the city.

The film forms an important record of the city, and shows some of the buildings that were destroyed by the bombing of the Second World War.

We're not quite sure of the actual date of the film, but the films showing at the St George's Picture Theatre were Masters of Men and Stardust, which would suggest that it was in 1923.

Cheryl Baker takes us around Canterbury, showing us how the city has changed, and how so much of it actually remains as it was at the beginning of the last century.

A modern day version of the film was shot, taking the same route through the city and Cheryl compares the films with experts on Canterbury's history, and just by chance, a bus displaying an advert for a film starring Jonny Depp appears at exactly the point where the old cinema used to be. Will this be a clue for future historians?

The film was passed to the Screen Archive South East by Canterbury library in 1996, but no-one knows who shot the film.

Do you have any information on where the film came from and who captured the images?
