julia aalto I`m not really a jersey-pat(I´m from Finland) but i was there last summer. I worked in a hotel!I`m in Finland now but tonighy i will travel to Egypt for a holiday! I hope I can come to Jersey next summer again! I just love that place and I miss my friends a lot!
Bye! See you next summer! Steve Korbey Those of you that recognise the name know I am not really an ex pat, but, after working to help locals with spinal cord injuries, I feel a sense of belonging. I am now in Canada, and would love to hear from you.
David, Red Deer I wonder which area of St. Helier still looks the way it did back in the sixties? Don't think I would recognise too many places today!! Bob, Isle of Man I would just like to comment on the St. Helier waterfront. I have been reading about it here on your wonderful website and I think it is horrible - they have destroyed the wonderful Jersey skyline Mick, Toronto Dave from Red Deer, no you wouldn't. The Forums gone the Wests gone the Pavs gone the Plaza, Deep, Rainbowroom, Tropicana, Chateau Plasier, Ritz,Caesers all gone. Hotels are closing in droves or turning into old age homes or flats. Tacky thrives with a steam clock and a restaurant made to look like an upsidedown boat. The management of the Island, I fear, was left in unskilled semipro hands. Kim, BC My daughter has just come back from a holiday on the island, Mick is right. Very tacky with way to many cars. Not the island we remember i'm afraid. Jayne, California I was born and raised on the Island and have lived through lots of changes. The way the Island is changing is not good. Tourism is non existent now and St Helier is a dive filled with underage drunks on the weekends. I am embarrassed to say I was borne and raised in Jersey. Things are not like they used to be. p.s. Sack the Island Development Committee for allowing too many ugly developments to be built. What happened to our heritage - we are now portraid as a tacky town not a beautiful Island. Dottie, Wales Hi! I have returned every year since leaving in '98 and notice huge differences every time....not a lot for the better either :( Liz, Jersey Mick, Toronto. It seems all you good guys left us to sink! Why don't you come back and do something about it?
Cathy, Plymouth For Liz in Jersey. Wwould that we could return - but for the amount i'd get for my house i'd be living in a bedsit in st helier ... not a place to bring up 2 kids. Ben, Northampton I only moved from Jersey 18 months ago, and can't believe how much it's changed in such a short time, espec. the Waterfront. But St Helier is my hometown and I still love it no matter how bad it gets. Alan, Normandy For Liz, Jersey : Sorry to leave you drowning out there, but I can hardly afford even the fare to get to Jersey these days !!! You can fly to Greece cheaper than to Jersey :-( My house with 1.5 acres in Normandy cost me about the price of a one car garage in St Helier. Must say, it's not very tempting to come back and live in a garage (where would I park the car ???!) When I do manage to visit my family on rare occasions, I am always horrified to see what a money and finance based culture can do to destroy an environment. Maybe one day, the "tax-haven" will disappear... just hope you all learn to swim before that day. I wouldn't rely on the wealthy folk who have built all the tacky tasteless horrors to help you too much. Hey Jane, do as I do : say you're from the Channel Islands ;-)) Frank, USA Sorry to say, and this will anger some, but I dont miss Jersey in the slightest. I left 3 years ago to marry my dear wife, Thelma, and we live here in the US. Jersey for me was restrictive, lacked ideas, had corrupt governing bodies (oh yes) and now I hear there is no tourism. It is sad, but alas, the world moves on, catch up! Stephanie, Kent Having been born in the Island and having lived there all my life, I finally left Jersey 2 years ago. It was a really difficult decision to make - leaving all my friends and family behind - but I can honestly say that I have never been happier (PAYE was a shocker at first but, as with most things, you get used to it). If I want the beach it is a short drive away - as are huge woods, castles, lakes and wide open spaces. There is fast access to the rest of the country and especially the continent. I'm never at a loss for something to do at a weekend and my social life does not revolve around pubs and clubs (like it seems to for all young people on the Island). I can't get "fogbound". I earn less and have a lot less cash to spend but somehow it doesn't seem to matter. Will I go back? I doubt it. Jersey was already on the path to self-destruction before I left and judging by feedback from friends and family, nothing has changed. |
