Heavy winds and high tides

High tides and heavy winds have caused flooding and road closures in the island. See photos and have your say.

Sea wall destroyed along Victoria Avenue

Unless you live in a completely dark and sound proof bubble – you must have noticed the fairly strong weather we’re experiencing.

Homes and shops along part of the south coast have been flooded and part of Victoria Avenue was closed at high tide. A 400m section of the sea wall was washed away down to the level of the cycle path.

The carriageway heading out of town, as well as roads through Bel Royal, Beaumont and Havre des Pas had to be closed.

Bad Weather

Other areas were also affected by flooding and trees brought down in the gales earlier, including First Tower and Gloucester Street (where the Jersey Opera House was flooded).

A storm surge combined with the high tide caused flooding and major disruption. Extra sandbags are being provided for people in First Tower and Havre des Pas as the weather looks set to be bad again over night.

Businesses and homes in St Aubin were helped by the Fire Service to pump out the flood water.

We asked a home owner in the area about the storm. She said “The properties along the boulevard appear to have seaweed half way up the drives, which looks like water came over the Harbour which is a worry for tonight. All the cellars have been flooded so the water has come in from underneath.”

So much for Jersey's reputation - we can't even build walls properly. You might go as far as to say that this storm is trying to shaft Jersey internationally!

Declan Hogan
My advice is that people should not go out until this devilish weather subsides. Citizens of Jersey remain at home for the love of Jesus.

bob
Now theres a job for walker & co when they retire - filling sandbags!!!
