Community gardening in Campbeltown

Lesley Kingsley and Louise Robertson of the Campbeltown Community Organic Garden gives an update on what's been happening in the garden in August and September.

It has been all change in the garden in the last few months. The project has taken on 2 Garden Co-ordinators – Lesley Kingsley and Louise Robertson. We both started at the end of August and we are really enjoying working at the Garden. Dave Pearson after spending many hours working in the garden and helping to get the funding for our posts is now taking a more backseat role; without Dave’s personal commitment there is no doubt that Campbeltown would not have a Community Organic Garden.

Kids in the Garden

One of the key roles of the garden is to encourage people to eat more healthily and to improve the availability of local food. On the first Saturday of the month we have been going along to our local Farmers Market. Customers have been very generous with their donations for our produce. One of the big sellers was Kohl rabi which took us by surprise, another favourite was curly Kale. The Primary 7 class form Dalintober school attended one of our activity days and enjoyed the melons, apples, tomatoes. peas and cucumbers the most. They taste tested some varieties of heritage peas that had grown over the summer and rated the different varieties – Simpsons Special was their favourite.

The highlight for most has been finding out about all of the mini-beasts and bugs that live around the garden. It has been great to have Donna Causer from Scottish Natural Heritage down to run some of these workshops. We are also very grateful to the GRAB Trust for lending resources for composting and wormery workshops.

Garden market

There is a lot of structural and landscaping work to be done over the winter in readiness for next spring, so we are very grateful to recent support from the Campbeltown Young Farmers and the Employability team who carried an enormous delivery of wood up the hill to the garden.

So what is next I hear you ask – well, we will be continuing our work in the garden whilst working hard to develop our volunteer base and education programme. Watch this space or check out our website for the most recent updates.
