Find your inner 'Indiana Jones' by taking part in some of the free events on offer as part of Scottish Archaeology Month (SAM). Excavations, workshops, walks and talks take place across Scotland throughout September.

Organised by Archaeology Scotland, SAM has grown from small beginnings and now features over 200 events marking the wide range of archaeology across Scotland. A Homecoming theme runs through the events on offer for 2009 with an examination of how Scots created their homes and heritage, ranging from Mesolithic times to 20th Century history.

New for this year is 'SAM for Schools!', a programme of events aimed exclusively at school groups. Factsheets and learning tools are also available in promoting archaeology in the classroom, ranging from recipes for prehistoric meals to a guide to making an archaeological survey of a school building.

SAM highlights in Glasgow and West Scotland

Find out how people prepared for the winter at the Cochno Shielings in West Dunbartonshire; Follow the Ardnadam Heritage trail at the Neolithic and Iron Age settlement in Argyll, dig a practice pit at the archaeology day at Loch Thom, walk around Wilsontown Ironworks or take a self-guided archaeology trail at Culzean Country Park.

Glasgow events include a guided tour of Govan Old Parish Church; a look behind the scenes at the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, graveyard tours of the Southern Necropolis and Abercromby Street Graveyard and heritage trails in various parts of the city.
