Community gardening in Campbeltown

Dave Pearson of the Campbeltown Community Organic Garden gives an update on what's been happening in the garden in June and July.

"June saw our 'young farmers' putting the finishing touches to our wildlife paths and observation area, and our 'forever youthful' volunteers getting CCOG spruced up for our open day.

The wind and rain didn't dampen our spirits and our open day began with our local piper 'piping in' our local councillor John Semple who cut the tape to our new sensory garden, funded by Campbeltown's 'Common Good Fund'.

Volunteers working in the garden

We were visited by more than 40 hardy souls braving the wind and rain with the visitors snapping up our organic over-wintered Aquadulce broad beans, having their faces painted by 'Funky Chicken' and generally enjoying their wanderings through the garden and wildlife area.

During July we had our paths renewed and handrails fitted to enable greater numbers of 'less able' visitors and volunteers to enjoy our community garden. A local company did us proud on price and workmanship with our volunteers pleased with the result.

We also hosted Castlehill school children and the 'after school club' children for educational activity days. Louise Robertson from the GRAB Trust led the children in wormeries/composting and Philippa Revill from the Forestry Commission did bugs and water wildlife while yours truly helped the children sow seeds and do the job of bees, pollinating melons and cucumbers.

Ailsa Clarke and Fergus Younger have worked wonders in obtaining funding from LEADER and Wider Role enabling our community garden to employ a full time garden co-ordinator. We have worked hard in getting this post filled and will introduce the post holders in my next blog when all has been signed sealed and delivered."
