Diane Keaton

Something's Gotta Give

Interviewed byAlana Lee

“I got to know a lot about Jack's love life, which was really interesting!”

She's been around the Hollywood block a good few times, with classics like The Godfather series, Sleeper, and Annie Hall under her belt. Since winning a Best Actress Oscar for Annie Hall in 1978, she's had many career dips and occasional box office success with fluff like The First Wives Club and Father Of The Bride. Now it looks like the wind has changed once again as Keaton has just won a Golden Globe and secured another Oscar nomination for her part in Nancy Meyers' romantic comedy Something's Gotta Give.

Did you ever think Hollywood would embrace this film about two older people falling in love?

I certainly didn't think a movie like this would ever be made. Nancy Meyers did, though, because she wrote it and she spent a lot of time thinking about it. But for me, I was like "Nancy, are you sure this is where you want to go?" But she did and it's fabulous.

So how was it?

Can you imagine? It's the best of all possible worlds for me. Not only do I get to kiss Keanu Reeves and have a big romance with him, but I also to get to have the same experience with Jack! He's the original bad boy so that's about as exciting as it gets. So what's bad for me? As far as I'm concerned, it was just thrilling. Also you’re protected by the words. Nancy's words are so beautiful and you're safe.

What do you mean by that?

You're safe because in real life, when you fall in love, it's more precarious and frightening but it's heaven to play this. I think this is the dream of all actresses at any age - to play someone who falls in love and who falls so deeply for the first time in her life. I mean, I think it's really unusual that a woman aged 55 for the first time in her life falls in love!

But what about doing that nude scene? Did you feel protected there?

I knew I would have to do that. I mean, it's in the script so I knew it was there and there was never a question about whether I would do it or not. It's just a woman's body.

So was it fun to play Erica?

Well, yes. She's sort of the female equivalent of Neil Simon, that's how successful she is. She has the fabulous house in the Hamptons and she has the most gorgeous daughter anybody could ever want, played beautifully by Amanda Peet. So that's Erica and she's pretty much alone and she's settled into it in a way. And that's where the fun and the surprise comes from.

You worked with Jack Nicholson on Reds (1981), so how did this experience compare?

Jack was great to work with. I had the most fun with Jack for the two weeks we were stuck in bed together half naked, and I really got to know a lot about Jack's love life, which was really interesting! He's a big Irish guy, you know. He's a big sentimental slob and he's a real fool for love. He's such a sucker. It's true! He really is.
