Miller's Crossing Special Edition DVD (1990)

Gangster wars of 1920s America are captured in the unique style of the Coen Brothers in their last film with cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld. This DVD has been on the wish list of many collectors and the news that it's a special edition will have excited many, but the end result is rather thin.

Before Wild Wild West

In Shooting Miller's Crossing, cinematographer turned director Barry Sonnenfeld talks us though his career with admirable frankness that's both appealing and fascinating. If ever you wanted inspiration to get into the movies, then here it is as Barry reveals how he simply bought an old camera and made himself available to all who needed it, from corporate filmmakers to porn directors.

The Coen's are undoubtedly the driving force and mould behind their films but Barry's interview sheds a welcome light on their thinking process and his input into the three movies they made together.

There's Just a Little More

After such the satisfying Sonnenfeld piece, you'll be ready to get stuck into more but sadly the rest is merely short, soundbite interviews shot during the making of the film with Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden, and John Turturro. The silver lining is that the few comments they make do help you to appreciate the thinking behind the film, but you're left wanting more. The remaining extras - two trailers and a stills gallery - don't fill the void. The presentation of the film is good with solid picture and stereo surround sound, but fans will undoubtedly have hoped for better. Please note that the US release is no different.
