Asteroid DVD (1997)

America's NBC claimed that "Asteroid" attracted over 75 million viewers in its original two-part format. Now welded into a movie, this tale of woe and disaster sees Earth once again threatened by a rock from space. The film debuts on a UK DVD that's a big improvement on the US release.

Maintaining the TV ratio of 1.33:1, this fullscreen transfer is as sharp as the NTSC source will allow. It doesn't present any problems and handles the darker scenes well.

Unlike the US release, we get a 5.1 sound mix. Although it's reasonably good, it doesn't excel in the bass department. Big rocks smashing into the Earth demand overblown sub woofer effects, and sadly this encoding will not have the neighbours at your front door.

The extra features include a photo gallery and a behind-the-scenes featurette, which includes an interview snippet with Michael Biehn, who complains that no-one remembers the movies he's been in. Rather more fun are the five deleted scenes included on the DVD, especially as they're all moments of mayhem and disaster.
