Eric Hall with Cilla Black

When Eric met Cilla

BBC Essex presenter Eric Hall has caught up with his long time friend Cilla Black to talk about her life in music, her successful television career and her return to her home town, Liverpool, to appear in Pantomime.

During the time that Eric was Head of Promotion at EMI Records, he worked with Cilla promoting songs such as “Baby We Can’t Go Wrong”.

Cilla talks to Eric about the time she first auditioned with The Beatles in front of their manager Brian Epstein and how it did not quite go as well as she’d hoped.

“I walked straight of the stage after my audition with the boys and straight out and got the ferry home,” exclaims Cilla. “I knew I wasn’t very good, I really wasn’t very good at all.”

Fortunately for Cilla, John Lennon persuaded Brian Epstein to allow her to do another live performance which resulted in him taking her on.

During the conversation with Eric, Cilla also speaks about how she never wanted to record the song Alfie, how she ended up hosting Surprise Surprise and how it was over three years before she met "our Graham" from Blind Date.
