Pirate BBC Essex... this could be the last time. This August, Pirate BBC Essex returns to mark the 40th anniversary of the Marine Offences Act which set out to outlaw the offshore stations. Read some of the messages.

mike lester
I took 4 days off work to listen pirate BBC Essex you have made a silly old man of 58 feel like iam 18 again thank you all!!!

Sandra from Harlow
Well, I've finally started to clean the house again, how could I even think of switching on the hoover when such great sounds were coming from the radio! As I stupidly forgot to book the 14th at holiday, I sat at my desk with my tranny feeding it tapes, so at least I've got great shows to relive. Please, please, please do it again and next time I'll spend the week on Harwich pier with my tranny by my side.

Peter Norris
Fantastic - thanks to all at BBC Essex, Pharos Trust, and the guys who made it happen. To paraphrase a dj (David Jacobs) a Hit not to be missed.

Andy Milton.
You seem to forget what good radio sounds like there’s Not a radio station in the uk that can come even close to the LV18 and the last 6 days “A BIG THANKS TO YOU ALL” we need this kind of station permanent to bring The spirit back to radio,Looks like its back to the CDs. Come on BBC bring back pirate radio At least the format time to put Wright a BIG WRONG! Once again Thanks for a great 6 days.

Simon Halsey
I have really enjoyed your broadcast, well done BBC. I was only eleven when the pirates closed but your programmes brought back happy memories of listening to Radio London and some of the others in the sixties. Great to hear all the DJs recounting their stories and an excellent selection of music from the period too, some songs I have not heard before. I could not listen on the last day as I was working so a chance to listen again would be marvellous. The response to your broadcast shows that there is a good case for doing it all again sometime. Please do! Best wishes to you all, Simon (webmaster - Hastings Rock Radio)

Brian Young in Bristol town
Many thanks for a EXCELENT 6 days, the memories, the music, the djs and BBC Radio Essex for putting it all together, you should be very proud of yourseleves, you deserve a Sony Radio award. Many thanks and I really hope you bring back Pirate BBC Essex soon

Pete Craughwell
Wonderful 6 days of memories and great music...thanks to everyone who helped make it happen...one small gripe..why no mention that Radio Caroline is alive and still sounding fine in 2007..it didn't end in 1968.Pete in Nottingham

Gill from Great Totham
Thank you to everyone involved in BBC Pirate Radio. It has been the most fun and best music on radio in 40 years! What superb broadcasting. Well done everyone and thank you all.

Wolfgang B. from Bonn, Germany
Hi there you there, this terrible silence yesterday in the evening (this time on the web) reminded me of this silence forty years ago, when Big L had closed down! A little bit frustrating.Thank's to all of you, the DJs, the stuff behind and to all the people who have made this big event possible.I do hope you have an idea for a "special" over christmas or easter next year?!Greetings again from Germany, W.B.

Mike Roberts
I've been in Radio Heaven for the last 6 days. This has been absolutely fantastic radio. The music, the fun, and the world-wide response have been superb. This has transported me back to the 60s and reminded me why I enjoyed pirate radio so much in those days. A huge thanks to all the DJs who made the journey to Harwich, and to everyone at BBC Essex who helped to put it all together. I truly hope it's not the last time. We need more radio to be entertaining like this.

Jenny, Layer de la Haye
Emperor Roscoe's show on Sunday night was fantastic! Is there going to be a listen again option or podcast on the website?? EDITOR: Sorry we're not able to offer Pirate BBC Essex on listen again.

Selwyn Rhodes
What a fabulous 5 days, I have not turned the TV on. But alas last night, turning on 765 I jast heard football, Oh well back to the TV. But thanks for a wonderful few days, I would pay double the license fee, to have our old Pirates back on. What brilliant radio, no swearing or smut, strange that. And still better than anything about today.Lets have more please.

ALAN ROY ex dj
THANKS FOR ROLLING BACK THE YEARS FELT LIKE ONLY ONLY YESTERDAY KEEP THE FAITH AND GOOD HEALTH TO ALL IN THE YEARS TO COME

Julie from Harwich
Isn't the world quiet & boring! Bring back the Pirates - Please?

Angus Morrison
Magic, pure and simple, can the powers that be afford to ignore the wishes of the masses,i wonder?Bring them back please!!!!! Kitchener,Canada.

Jane from France
If I die tonight, I'll die happy - thanks to all of you, it's been great!

roy
Tuesday evening: It feels just the same as it did on that dreadful Monday 40 years ago - emptiness and a sense of loss almost even grief. Hearing Ed Stewart at the end, play The Beatles 'A Day in the Life' and the haunting 'Big L' theme was almost too much, definitely a bite the lip occasion and pretend there is something in your eye.How proud we were of Caroline carrying on.We can't raise the Mi Amigo, but we certainly can try to make sure that the Ross Revenge eventually becomes a National Monument. How about it? the centre piece of the Olympics in Docklands broadcasting on 558.

Rob Hofland
Thank you very much for six amazing days of radio. I din't catch much sleep, but it was worth it. Been listening online in good quality. It was nice to hear all the memories and the great music from '64 till '67. Please bring Pirate BBC Essex back in the not to distant future. Greetings to all staff from Rob in the Hague, Holland

harold pack
why can you not put this service on one of your local stations on the am frequncy every sunday

Rebekah P - near Harwich Essex
I am far too young to remember the pirates, but I have really enjoyed listening to a wonderful sound that is so unlike the mass produced radio of today. The Pirates should stay & more stations learn from the style and not contrain the DJs just to fit some 'wonderful' idea to make each station sound the same. Thank you for the past 6 days. They were wonderful and come back soon!

Phil Armand
To think back to that time slot I used to listen to the pirates on a transistor radio under my pillow late at night as if I was a criminal doing something bad.Great programme well done.....

John Culyer
Thanks lads. What a great few days. Radio One when it came was such a disappointment after we'd had the full-blooded thing for a couple of years. The pain of that awful day in August 1967 when Big L went off the air stung me again. I know things change, but what would have happened to music if Wedgewood Benn, Wilson and the lot hadn't laid their dead hands on the airwaves?

Ben (from Holland)
Thank you for these wonderful days. Please do it again in august 2008.

CLIVE GARRARD RADIO CAROLINE 2007 TEAM
I have thoroughly enjoyed all the programmes that i have heard during this Broadcast. It was wonderful to hear Rosko, johnnie walker, mark wesley, keith Hampshire, mike Ahern etc etc, recounting their own memories from the 60's.The music was fantastic, and i would love it if this could become an annual event every august. What personality and entertainment the d.j's gave compared to todays blandradio programming.clive GarrardRadio Caroline 2007 team

Sandra from Harlow
Just one word sums up the last week - FANTASTIC - thanks a million to everyone involved, I'm sorry it's over.

Nick 'Bolland'
I quite like the:1)distant/echoey effect that seems to be on all the time, seemingly what they did in the 60s. Or is the studio a portacabin with terrible acoustics 2) two or three people in the background apparently chuckling to any faintly amusing/daring comment 3) general aura of doubt about whether this is officially Big L or not 4) fact that there are obviously many people who grew up with the pirates who love this for my sins I was on Caroline 558 in 1987 - a happy time and a good sound in my opinion

steve weddle
Oh no...you've gone again. Same time, same place next year?

Mark in Hitcham
Johnnie Walker. We love you, salute you and dearly miss you Monday to Friday. It's been at great weekend, especially meeting you Sunday and getting my picture with you.Roll on 4.30 next Sun.

Steve Mason
What a great few days of radio-"Gold" Stations hang your heads in shame! Pity I couldn't listen on my car radio here in the West Midlands. Well Done All!

Simon from Baldock
Driving the other night listening to Johnnie Walker drift in and out on medium wave, took me back to far-off days listening to the Seventies Pirates, in particular RNI. It has been yet another fantastic coup for Radio Essex, congratulations at all involved. It has shown up the blandness that has become commerical radio, ironic as the provision of comercial radio in the UK was the ultimate goal of those broadcasters back in the sixties. How dissapointed with the end product they must be. Listening to laughter and fun in the studios was a real tonic. Radio doesn't get any better than this. Don't let this be the last time - please.

Mike Melbourne Bedford
We'll I've been listening to vast amounts of Pirate BBC Essex and have recorded 12 audio cassettes to listen to whenever the fancy takes me. Thanks to every one involved in the broadcasts and a big thank you to the management of BBC Essex for making a 56 year old feel a lot younger. Here's to the next time.

Mary Burns - Cumbernauld
Thank you for a wonderful 6 days of Pirate BBC Essex. It brought back so many memories. The sounds were superb and the DJs sounded the same as 1967 - wonderful thing radio. I still have my tear stained newspaper cuttings from when Radio London closed down and I can still remember the awful bleeping that tried to silence Radio Caroline unless you went to the sea.Can we have some more please????

Sara G
More please!

Terry Farrell Burnham-on Crouch
This is the first time that the tv has had a rest and every radio in the house has been going full bore.Wonderful music presented in the only way that pirates can. The BBC have certainly gone up in my estimation.

Neil Croft
So many great memories of the mid-60s. A smashing job from everyone. Listened to the real thing (Big L) as a forces DJ in Germany at the time. A genuine tear in the eye as I listen to the final moments of what could be the last time...hope not.

phil webb
please please please please come back you bring back so many hazy memories. Do a listen again bit please about the history of pirate radio, my bloody pc stopped recording and I did not realise. boo hoo

Roger Toy
Wonderful...radio...Big...E...I can say no more than THANK YOU..all the guys from the 60's ships...WOW...let's do it some more...

Heather
Although I wasn't able to listen to all the broadcasts I really enjoyed all that I did hear. It brought back some wonderful memories. I feel sad that it's over. Please please bring Pirate BBC Essex back again. It would be great if it could be broadcast yearly at Easter or August bank holiday weekend.

Cliff Proctor, Warwickshire
Thanks for a brilliant few days of radio. This was proper fun radio. I really enjoyed all the shows I heard. Comercial radio say advertisers will not pay for fun radio. Well good on the BBC for showing them why they have the lion share of the audiance! I hope BBC Essex can produce a CD of the highlights of the last few days. Please do this again.. Soon

Anne-Marie
Thanks!

Paul Wright
It is now 14.50 on the 14th August and I have been crying my eyes out for the last 10 minutes,Godbless you all.Paul Wright in Rushden.

dave (smokey) fagg
A truly wonderful & memorable 6 days of nostalgic radio listening. Nothing before has brought back so many memories. Please don't let this be "the last time!"

Andrew Mackenzie
As I think my coffee from the pirate mug, I sadly await 3pm. Tonite I'll drink something stronger from it!Greatest 6 days of radio since 1967. Great music, some which I must of missed first time round. Please keep the web site going as otherwise it will all seam like it was just a dream. Many thanks EVERYONE.Andrew

Jenny Plumb
In a word FANTASTIC and when can we hear you all again. It has gone by so quickly and has been absolutely wonderful to hear such great music more than just an odd one or two from that time. Miss not hearing SEA OF HEARTBREAK by Joe Brown -no. 2 in 1966 though. Thanks and please consider an annual event but on main BBC Essex waveband - my radio nearly had a fit.

Malcolm Grace
Six days of "A" Grade radio. Pure 100%. Want more? C.J. pays homage to the pirates each Sunday on Strawberry Fields on Palm FM in Torbay.

Roland Brooks
Its been fab hearing you guys all over again, thanks for a great week.

Paul,
the spirit of free radio, it sounds tremendous. I now know what has been missing. I have been listening and waiting for so long. PLEASE comeback soon.

Willy Walker -Big L
Gotta say hi to Ed (Stewpot),Shag (Duncan),Cardboard Shoes (Skues),Normy (St.John)...am having a good laugh listening to all you guys in the studio. Will contact the 'Hall of Fame" re Duncan's admission for "Architect in the sky"...Sorry I'm not there..cheers ya'll- Willy (Florida)

Maureen Browning
It's been great listening to you all again - I was lucky enough to be on holiday last week, so managed to tune in a lot from Thursday - Sunday, and what a bonus it was to the holiday!! I must say that last night's JW slot was not so much a radio programme as a radio 'fly on the wall' at a boys night out at JW's place, but great fun. Pirate Radio is a bit like many other things in life when you get to our age... every time could be the last time, but you sure as hell hope it's not when you're still having such a good time!! If all else fails, there is no excuse at all not to celebrate the 50th anniversay, but please can you put it on a clearer FM waveband (yes, I know it's not kosher), as we'll all be a little harder of hearing by then too!!!OK, John and Etoile, back with you tomorrow morning - just make sure you have a few 60's tracks cued up to wean us off slowly!!

John Hogg Tynemouth Tyne and Wear
Well done to you all.Best radio ever.Maybe better than the original.Well almost.Pirate radio will live with me forever.Come back soon

Sue Burns
Absolutely superb. abandonded the tv as soon as Pirate BBC Essex started and have listened all day and night since. So sad it is finishing today, Please, Please, do it again and dont make us wait too long for another Pirate radio week. Oh well back to the t.v after this afternoon. Thanks to all involved in making this the best listening 6 days since the 60's.

Paul Elsey, Dawlish, Devon
It's been fantastic. Thanks to all you guys for proving that real radio can still be done.

Ian Paterson
To all the Pirates and the funs, worldwide. Many, many thanks for the past six days. Hopefully, Auntie Beeb will see fit to allow another event in the not too distant future. I don't think once a year is too much to ask for. This music is too much of broadcasting history to be lost forever.Ian near Harwich

Norma Baron
The past few days have been fantastic radio. The energy of all the presenters and their love of music has shone through.I feel sorry for the youngsters today who have no-one to put this enthusiasm for today's good, new music across to them!

Keith the Wireless Waffler
The broadcast is of great archival interest, I trust that as well as anoraks storing recordings the BBC will. The quality of reminisences by presenters and listeners this time. It is of immense historical value as an oral history of the sixties offshore stations. Thanks to the BBC for a totally excellent broadcast.

Bill Curtis
Listening to you from sunny Spain, dont worry about the slight over modulation on the internet, sounds like it used to be on am during a storm. Its great to have you back, surely there must be a way have an national am oldies channel for the uk.

Keith, Canterbury
A message to all, bombard the BBC, we want Pirate to stay!

philip

What can be added to what's already been said, well done to all for a fab few days of many many great memories. I can honestly say I have not listened to the radio as much for years. great signal on 975 medium wave in Aylesbury

John Parker
To all involvedThanks for such an enjoyable re-creation of the good old days. My wife and I have listened to Pirate BBC Essex as much as possible via 765 and on the internet. Anecdotes from those involved at the time of the pirates have added to what has been a wonderful re-creation of a piece of social history. Thanks for looking not just at the big stations but also some of the smaller ones like 270 and the fort based stations. I remember the feeling of sadness at the closing of Big L at 3 p.m. 40 years ago and even after this short time will miss Pirate BBC Essex when things revert to “normal”. Congratulations to all those involved in what must have been a major undertaking. Please come back soon.Well done the BBC.RegardsJohn ChessingtonSurrey

Deb - Harwich
Thanks to you all for helping so many oldies re- live the golden days of their youth, what a fab week this has been. I have been listening every day at work and will be so sad to go back to 'normal' radio tomorrow. this week has been a great boost to Harwich as well, bringing in so many visitors, its been great seeing Ha'penny pier and the quay so busy. Just wish it could go on and on and on ......you have made an old bird feel like a spring chicken again !!!! love to you all - keep on rockin

George the Gardener
Thankyou to all concerned for Pirate Radio Essex. There must be a place for this type of living radio amongst all the "ordinary" radio stations.

This has been radio as it should be !! With messages and emails of thanks, coming in from around the WORLD, maybe the "powers that be" will take note and start catering for the audience that is out there.

Now in Essex - 40 years ago I was having a sad day in Norfolk as Big L vanished from our lives.Yes - something has been missing from radio and this weekend has brought it back - FUN!Thanks to everyone - old-timers and new boys alike.

Jean-Paul Séculaire
Absolutely brilliant. Many thanks to the BBC for launching this project. Radio the way it should be. Respect to all the presenters. Please please please do it again - maybe make it an annual event?

paul carrick
i,ve just loved your shows it brings back the good old days when you were off walton and frinton.maybe you could use the ross revenge at tilbury next time. which would make the broadcasts more enjoyable as you would be broadcasting from a real pirate ship.keep up the good work.

Paul Scivier

Thanks everybody involved, for bringing back to the air the best years of pop music ever. The intervening 43 years have just melted away. Please somebody bring this back to the airways on a permanent basis.

Cadmonster & KJ, Teynham, Kent
Brilliant shows, recapturing the sounds of offshore radio as it was in the 60s. Well done! Here's to when you come back yet again in the (near) future

Brian Mentor
What a fantastic radio station, great music great presentation, and the memories of Caroline and Big L just keep coming. The BBC should certainly consider a sixties style station based on Pirate Essex. I have no doubt that it would clean up the competition. Well done and thank you to all involved

ivan colchester

Listening to this station has been great. Such a shame it has to end. My parents Jean and John Adams in Felixstowe are avid listeners and will be at Harwich at the end. Mum remembers winning a competition for dinner with Dave Cash at the Pickwick Club back in the day! Thanks for bringing this station to a new generation!

Steve Wilkes
Best Broadcast from BBC Essex well done you guys

Dick Offringa Emmeloord - NL
Iam 40 years younger now.On my old Philips radio are still the points of all the offshore radiostations; like Radio Caroline and Radio London.I still remember the close down of Radio London and after that Robbie Dale on Radio Caroline.

Kathie Guthrie
Brilliant! I used to go to sleep with Johnnie Walker under the bedcovers! The evocative 'He's here! He's on! Johnnie Walker!' and then the guitar music is pure nostalga. I have my tape recording today's final shows and hope 11 am doesn't disappoint!

Brian Samuels
I was at home and could not believe that such great music was being banned by the Authorities. This was my first experiance of Governments not giving a fig about the normal person.Shame on Mr Wilson

Dave BIG D Stephenson
Thanks to all the DJ's who have made an enjoyable long week-end listening here in France. Cashman please give my best to Mark Roman in Spain I remember our chats about the pirates at Blue Point Towers in his days at 2UE in Sydney.Come back on air again soon.Big D

Well as the time draws near, and another dream of radio broadcasting comes to a close. What does one say. "Its been great, listening voices we all grow up with, and voices that may us remember. In 2004 we all wrote to the DG of the BBC to ask for what Steve and Tim, here in Essex have done.......full time, maybe one day.....From us all on the " Friends Of BigL" website we thank you for 'radio' as it should be...........but hey the radio in'st bad today. Stay here in the best County BBC Essex.

jane brewer
great music, keep up the good work, I wasn't born at the time of the original pirates but enjoy all this music played. my husband has told me all about the original pirate days and how good they were.

Many Thanks to you all for a great and wonderfull week on the lv18, looking forward to the same again soon, hopefully this can be now a yearly event, looking forward to meeting you all this afternoon at th E/P cinima sincerely hope this is not the last time.kind regards to you all.

Vince Neale
It's been great reliving the wonderful carefefree days of the mid 60s and I thank all who gave up their time to make it possible. I wish I could pop over and attend the Electric Cinema event later today to thank all the djs but I'll be at work in Orange County, California. KEarth is the LA area oldies station 24/7/365 but it has a very restricted play-list so it's been great to hear some underplayed oldies especially as they've been introduced by some great djs from the past. It's a pity Tony B and DaveLT missed the reunion but maybe next time if there is one. How do we ensure our voices are heard to ensure that this is NOT the last time or is this just some cruel 'teaser' to encourage people to listen? It's going to bring all the horrible 1967 memories back when 3pm rolls around today (7am for me). It seems the old original pirate commercials and jingles are missing this time or did I just imagine they were played 3 yrs ago? Is it just my bad luck to have missed it or has there been a ban on the Days of Pearly Spencer? Neither do I remember hearing Rinky Dink by Sounds Incorporated or Soul Coaxing by Raymond Lefevre both of which were big pirate era songs for me. One of the biggest frustrations for me during the past few days is how to contact the people who have revealed they have old reel to reel tapes of the original programmes. Any suggestions?I've also really enjoyed feeling connected via this web-site to all people with a similar passion for the pirates. Meanwhile here's to the next time. Thanks again to all for 6 very happy days and good luck getting ashore safely

Neil Pipkin
Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful Great to hear all the DJ's again takes me back to my teens. They all sound great. Must not be the last time. Why cant it be on the web as a permanent station. Well done BBC Essex

Ex Lord Lucan..
Unlike me you're able to return, make sure you stay this time, good luck.

John Ross
I'm in Seattle, eight hours away from Essex, enjoying the memories of the radio pirates. It was a whole different world, wasn't it? Sometimes I'm amazed that so many of us survived...You wouldn't have a copy of "Here Comes Captain Zoom," by Captain Zoom and the Androids, by any chance? Or maybe Judy Collins' "I'll Keep it With Mine?" I'd love to hear either one of them.John RossSeattle Washington USA

Joyce W
Listening to you from Nanaimo, Vancouver Island on Canada's west coast. Used to listen to Radio's London and Caroline...... It is 7pm now and really enjoying going down memory lane. Love the music! Great to hear the music from British singers and bands that we don't get here. Would love to hear anything from the Small Faces.with or without Rod Stewart.I so remember waking up to Tony Blackburn and trying to do my homework to Johnnie Walker!Great stuff hope you guys can do this again.

Nigel Johnson , Gainsborough Lincolnshire.
Thank you all for some superb radio programmes bringing back some wonderful memories of forty years ago in my youth. The summers were better? and global warming had not been invented? Life was a lot less complicated. Thanks, hope this could be a permanent station.?

ERIC WHITE
WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA AND THANKS TO EVERYONE INVOLVED IN MAKING IT ALL HAPPEN.THERE ARE SO MANY RADIO STATIONS PLAYING THE SAME BORING MUSIC WITH PRESENTERS WHO ARE NOT INTERESTED IN WHAT THEY ARE DOING, THE RADIO LEGENDS THAT HAVE BEEN ON THE LAST FEW DAYS PUT THE CURRENT OUTPUT ELSEWHERE TO SHAME.

Euan Walker
Back to the 60's with Johnnie Walker, I live in Scotland could only pick up Caroline North in the 60's so never got too hear you then, can now thru Internet. Remember pirates with great fondness, wish these days were back (sigh) Good luck and best wishes from Bonnie Scotland. Ring the Caroline bell one more time Johnnie!
