Pirate BBC Essex message board

Pirate BBC Essex... this could be the last time. This August, Pirate BBC Essex returns to mark the 40th anniversary of the Marine Offences Act which set out to outlaw the offshore stations. Read some of the messages.

C J Munroe
Keeping the bell ringing here in Torquay Devon. Great to hear all the guys.Rosko, Steve,Keefers and Mike A. Ray Teret is still around too. Listen in on his radio caroline 199 website. Keep the Ol girl alive. Come on now PLAY PUMP UP THE PIRATES. LOve CJ

dave jenkinson
this has been a extraordinary weekend for music broadcasting as all the supportive mail will show BUT there has to be a progression. So would pirate broadcasting of 2007 support the twang/editors/my chemical romance et al with the same passion that john peel promoted love/doors/janis joplin 40 years ago? Keep an open mind mates.

P Sharman
Absolutely brilliant - many thanks to all concerned for presenting such a great week of music and laughter

Rob Cracknell
Absolutely brilliant - great radio, how it should be done. Do it again soon !

Bronwyn - West Malling, Kent
This has been a truly fantastic weekend. Superb to hear Johnnie on the 9-midnight shift again. As soon as that theme tune starts up it sends a shiver down my spine and I am 15 again. Thanks so much to everyone involved for setting this up - and a plea to make it available on 'Listen Again'. I'm goindg to be working on Tuesday and can't bear the thought of missing those last programmes. PLEASE don't let this be The Last Time!!

Steve Comer, Bristol
Great to hear Pirate BBC Essex again over the internet. I'm travelling to Harwich tomorrow to see the LV18 from the pier. Somehow I just had to be on the East Coasrt for the 40th anniversary.....That Johnnie Walker midnight announcement nearly 40 years ago was a key moment, as he said then 'Caroline continues', on the internet and on Sky channel 0199.

Jackie in Norwich
Sailed round LV 18 today listening to you.The style and atmosphere has never been bettered.Gone all nostalgic. Many thanks.

Paul Wright
I should think there are few people choosing the Essex fm service while the masters are on.Keep on rockin' and show the others how to do it.Paul in Rushden,Northants.

Kathy C
Has anyone out there seen the Met Office forecast for Harwich on Tuesday??? You might be spending another night on board!

DAVE MACNAB in DARKEST ESSEX
How fresh and exciting it is to hear both DJ's and Presenters sounding human again and not like bland automated radio machines. Keep it up don't stop. Its wonderful.Allthe the best to all.

Richard of Colchester
Another maximum day (as Doug Kerr would say)!Loved Keith Martin and Ian doing their Kenny & Cash impersonation (not sure which one was Kenny!!!)Look forward to Keith and Ray Clark tomorrow breakfast - not sure how Ray will cope!Am just recovering from Rosko's wall of sound. Not sure the neighbours are!Life will be that much poorer on Tuesday at 3pm - as it was 40 years ago at the same time.

John Hogg,Tynemouth,Tyne and Wear
Great to hear those great sounds again. Was a 270 man myself and later Caroline South.Miss them all still after 40 years. I cant believe this will be the last time. hope my old mate Ian Kellock is listening.See you again one day?

sue haher

Peter, England and Austria
rosko!! the technically best show in europe for 40 years! How did 4 do it with that mixer etc,????

David Burton
Thanks to all who organise this marvellous event. There is nothing near as good on the radio these days. Finally ,thanks to BBC Radio Essex for putting this on.

Dave Roberts
Great to hear radio with real people doing the job with humour and enjoying it. The human touch is missing all too from everyday radio in the UK right now. Pirate BBC Essex is a breathe of fresh air and I hope this isnt the last time!

Ian Bowskill
Great stuff guys. Reliving the heady days of the 60s when the pirates changed radio for ever. The only pity is that you've got to face your own August the 14th and not keep broadcasting for ever.

Jonathon Holt
Listening to the Emperor; such great radio! It shames many of today's so called 'DJs'; the bland & boring.Great radio once again from the North Sea.

colin
fantastic! makes me feel 40 years younger. Dont let it end here, radio as it should be.

Julia Henderson
Brilliant! Reminded me of the fun days when I should have been revising- but you haven't as yet told us sunbathers when to turn over. I remember being told this every 30 mins, whilst revising for the GCEs.Music is great- glad I kept my old singles & albums.Again please?

Phil Howard
Congratulations to Ray Clark,Steve Stuanton,Tim Gillett and all the team at BBC Essex to celebrate 40 years of Pirate Radio memories,What great musical memories from the sixties and the memories of all the presenters on the boats in the sixties.Fantastic to hear on the internet here in Huddersfield.Rosko,Dave Cash, Johnnie Walker, Roger Day and all the crew. FantasticTake care and best Wishes to you all, come back everydayPhil Howard (ex-land-based jock)

Barry S
It's just amazing, as though 40 years have just vanished. Well done lads, brilliant job, well done. Feel the need to drive to Frinton and flash a few lights...thanks BBC.By the way, Caroline (Ross Revenge) is still in Tilbury Dock!

Tom
Rosko my man !!!Just great, back on form and making my audio system really rock with some superb sounds.Respect!!!

Lynda Smith
It is so great to hear Rosco again. No one else anywhere like him.

Dave Shax
Just found this and would like to thank the Guys for re-creating the sounds I loved growing up as a teenager in Folkestone in the 60's. Cheers All

Reg
Fantastic, lets have a permenant am channel for us 'old hippies', or just a web feed will do, BBC Essex how about it ??.

Mike and Julie. Ossett, West Yorkshire
Absolutely brilliant - teenagers again with no worrries just a head full of memories - can't wait for Rosko. This should be a permanent station for old 'vinyl heads' when music was enjoyable, young and vibrant and if it can't be permanent what about realeasing CD's of the programmes so we can relive the memories when day to day depression sets in?What about playing some Temptations for all the crowd that used to go to "Banky" in Dewsbury.

Nick
What a brilliant concept, congratulations on attracting so many DJ's from the pirate era and capturing the pioneering spirit of the time. The programming is just fantastic. Listening to Rosko proves that old pirates dont fade away, they just get better.

Pete, in Ware, Herts.
Keith Martin is very funny! He should be on the radio REGULARLY!Upper crust camp hilarity, the Brian Sewell of offshore radio...Can't help thinking Roger Moffat, Bruce Wyndham etc.Posh subversives!Great fun.

Mairuz
Great shows great Dj's and great music - why is there no radio like this anymore? Long may it continue..thanks everyone - a Caroline North listener

Tony Hornby
I was working at Butlins Clacton for a summer season in 1967, it was a great summer made even better with music from radio Caroline. We had the added bonus of being able to see the radio mast from the shore, and every evening car headlights would be flashed out to sea, what memories I'm 21 again. Please don't let this be the last time you do this.

Ariane E.
I am listening from Germany. This is a really superb idea. Only pity that it ends on 14th of August.

Helen C
This is absolutely brilliant. It's so good that I've been missing "The Archers" to listen to PRE and what greater compliment could I pay you?! (Good thing there's Listen Again, huh?)

Jeremy
Just all round Great!! Hope bbc radio does this again some time soon...

Steve Ball, Stoke-on-trent.
As good old Rosko would say it made my back crack, and my pelvis slack. No seriously,a totally amazing experience. Loved it all. Lets do it again next Easter....

David, Gateshead, UK
You have all done done a fantastic job during these last few days. Great music, great presentation with bags of enthisiasm. You put the commercial 'gold' stations to utter shame.

Pete
Caroline North was my station up in Newcastle-under-Lyme but I tried to hear all of them. Never believed the Beeb would be helping me relive my pirate mania, but I'm really impressed by your efforts. Red Sands the other week and now this! Real radio will never die! Fab, basically...

david rackham
enjoying pirate bbc essex be sorry after 14 th august it goes off air, there is a demand for it so it should be made available on a basis allways on air 24/7 nationwide, wonderful format and musicdavid rackham

Ann
The good old days are back...if only for a week....thanks for transporting me back to my teenage years and my beloved pirate radio.

Angela Hogan
I'm listening on the net from the Sunshine Coast, Qld, Australia. Thanks to Marge (Norm St John's sister) for letting me know about the broadcast. It has been fantastic - brings back so many great memories of listening to the pirates in the 60's before we moved to Australia.

kerry hart
recieving loud and clear now..takes me back to when i was fifteen.....carefree and fancy free days........LOVELY....Especially Johnnie Walker as if he's never been away..Thankyou BBC Essex..

rod
great sound good to have back wish you were here all time from rod in cornwall

Ed Morton
Great weekend of good music & great Djs. Bringing back good memories of the 60s.This is radio at its best, bring it back in the near future again.

Nick from Halesowen, West Midlands
Superb. Wonderful. I only found you by accident but I'm just old enough to remember the old days. I have really enjoyed the music, some of which I've never heard before. It puts the current AM oldies stations to shame and also exposes a gap in the BBC's programming. Radio 2's decision to go younger, and Radios 1, 1 Xtra (obviously) and 6 Music being targeted at a youngish audience means that there isn't so much for the pirate (50+) generation and older. I loved Radio Caroline South, though being brought up in the midlands reception from any of the pirates during the day was sometimes difficult. It was helped by the wire aerial my dad put up in the garden and that I could plug into the "big" radio. I also heard Radio London, Caroline North, Radio City and Radio 270. I can get a faint signal up here on 765kHz but I don't have that wire aerial anymore! However the internet is doing a fine job. A big thank you to everyone involved and a job well done!

Jürgen - for Johnnie Walker
a great Hello to Johnnie - I would say thank you for beeing back as a "Pirate" for some days - it's so great and wonderful to listen to your voice again. When Caroline was on the air in the 60s it was difficult to get a clear signal in Frankfurt/Germany but now I can have "the full power" by internet! I was so exited that you started your show again with "Because they are young" and with the Caroline-song - my wife couldn't belief that her "oldie" was so young at once!Thank you Johnnie for all the wonderful time you gave us in the past - all the best for you for a fine future!Jürgen from Ingelheim/Germany

Jürgen
I'm so happy to listen all day via internet to the great Pirates again! Best what Radio could serve!!!I bought a big external harddisk to record so much as I can get!Who ever thought in the 60s that the BBC could once do such a fantastic show to remember big Caroline. Thanks to all DJs - they do a wonderful job!!And please: don't say this is the last time - this fantastic type of broadcasting could never be for the last time, see the great success of beeing Pirate BBC Essex - so please do it also in the future!!! Will you do so? Suuurely!Jürgen from Ingelheim/Germany

Vic Gerhardi
August 14th 1967 3.00 pm is one of those times that you can remember where you were and those immensely strong emotional feelings that we all had. How can anyone explain that to anyone who wasn’t there? It is an experience and no matter how hard you try, you cannot give other people your experience. But what Pirate BBC Essex and partners have achieved this weekend, has provided an amazing vehicle for us all to get together to share those memories, the music and the love we have for each other, making another great experience to remember for ever. Thank you.

Jules Strand
I was in floods of tears as soon as the Duane Eddy intro to Johnnie Walker started up. Took me right back to being 15 again, and JW sounded just the same; but we've all been through a lot since then! Brilliant show; is it on listen again anywhere, I can't find it?

Howard Bond
Amid the wave of nostalgia we are (rightly) enjoying right now, let's not forget that pirate radio was also a physically dangerous and at times rather dodgy business including sabotage and murder. The objective of the pirates was to get commercial radio legally established on dry land. Objective achieved but does today's commercial output sound anywhere near as good as Caroline, London and SRE did?

Shoeless Susan in Yorkshire
LOVING the sounds, wishing I could be there with you. Thank you all so much. Big love to Dave Cash. Thank you SO much for all you're doing, you wondrous pirates. Jonny Depp has nothing on you! Sx

Martin (in Manchester)
This is radio as it should be.You guys are doing some fantastic programmes.

Sharon Alexander
It's no good, you've got to bring this off the air right now. My life has been on hold from the moment I walked into the launch party on Thursday night and saw all you guys: Dave Cash, Rosko and Johnnie and ever since, have had to have a radio within 2 ft tuned into this amazing experience. What a blast, now off to Harwich to see Johnnie (again!!)Thanks boys(??!!)- you have created something truly special. (I just wish I had a boat - mind you it seems like I'm sailing on the crest at the moment)

david lewis

Hi guys. Wonderful to hear you back again. You inspired me to start as a d.j in 1964 ,still running now doing rock n roll and 60's .galaxie bob. esex

Paul Smith - Welwyn Garden City
I have listended as much as I can to the broadcasts which have been just fantastic. Something that is striking me right now is how we felt we were part of a big community in the 60s (especially 67), and the same is true now.It is heart-warming to see DJs also sending messages to this facility. What I want to ask is how much of the content will be available as a "Listen Again" facility?I shall be at work on Tuesday and would love to hear Johnnie & friends at some point - even for posterity! Thanks again to you all for re-living special days and creating new memories

Jeff Martin
It all sounds fantastic guys. How nice to hear the greatest era in radio and music remembered so well. Lets hope it's not the last time.

David J Southway
Great to hear you back on the air. Its what gave me inspiration to work in broadcasting which I left just two years ago. keep up the good work.

roy
Wow, absolutely out of this world. Recognised Mike Ahern's voice straight away without looking at the listing. Even fades in and out and goes off the air for a moment on the net using dial up, just like it used to. So much better than all those quiz shows and DJ babble we get these days from the regular stations.PLEASE do it again.

bobbie
What a wonderful few days re-living pirate days. My teenage years are flooding back. THANKYOU. Loving everything. Do you have to go?? Please stay the world misses you....Thanks again for the music and fun.xxxx bobbie

Alan from Heybridge
Coincidence?I have been listening to pirate radio since 1964(mainly Caroline- I still have my Mi Amigo Empire badge) and have been keenly anticipating the return of pirate BBC Essex for weeks. Anyway, in all these years, I have never heard of Pretty Balleria by the The Left Banke until last Thursday. I have now heard it three times including this morning.Yesterday I was sorting through a record collection that I acquired about a year ago, that I am now selling. Guess what I found? The original single- Pretty Ballerina! As I do not have record player it is now on a famous web auction site for 49p.Keep up the good woork!!

Chris Mould
Brilliant. Well done. Why can't all radio sound this good?

BOB FROM EXETER
SOOO GOOD TO HEAR THE SILVER SURFERS STILL BROADCASTING AND SOUNDING EVEN BETTER, NO STATIC!!DOWN AT THIS END OF THE COUNTRY IT WAS A MATTER OF VERY CAREFUL TUNING (USUALLY AT NIGHT) TO GET A SIGNAL THAT KEPT FADING, WHICH MEANT SOME OF THE CHAT WAS GUESS WORK. WHY DON'T YOU GUYS GET TOGETHER MORE OFTEN,I DON'T THINK I CAN WAIT ANOTHER 40 YEARS LET ALONE BE AROUND THEN. BRILLIANT SHOWS AND IT HAS CAPTURED ALL THE ATMOSPHERE FROM THE BEST ERA EVER ON RADIO, FRINTON FLASHERS,TWIGGY DAY,CARDBOARD SHOES AND EVERYONE INVOLVED, YOU KICK STARTED POPULAR MUSIC IN THIS COUNTRY AND RELEASED THE YOUNG GENERATION FROM GOVERNMENT CONTROL. THANKYOU

Martin
It is amazing to hear the DeeJay’s from 40 years ago again like nothing has happened. Their voices so familiar; their ‘antics’ so much like years ago and their choice of music like it was and for ever is to be. As I am now 56 and subtract the past 40 years, it makes me feel 16 again. I am still mad though. Mad at those who made happen what did on 14th August 1967. But I was glad Radio Caroline South with Johnnie Walker, Robbie Dale and Ross Brown with the crew, kept the station in the air. On the 2nd or 3rd March 1968 I think Johnnie Walker and friends were last heard from Radio Caroline South. How about it Johnnie, next year 2008, around that time again? Thank you all who have made this possible for just these few days. Because They're Young

daniel corcoran from los angeles
this is some the best time i have heard on the radiofor years listen to alot the bbc hope you do it again and post the music you play hoopefully

Raúl Saavedra
Good morning for you, Rick Clark...Evening in Costa Rica, enjoying your dynamic show. Keep up the good work!

john from basildon
as i sit watching my security screens my thoughts are returning to those wonderful days of the 60's.ironicaly i will be 60 on tuesday when you all wind up pirate bbc essex so i look forward to tuesday with a mixture of happyness and sadness but at least we still have cardboard shoes on a monday with his watery wireless days. a big thank you to all concerned for this great walk down memory lane. long live the pirates

dave jenkinson
played by Rosko dave jenkinsonI'm privileged to be around this weekend just as I was 40 years ago when london/caroline and others gave us the same freedom of choice that we now enjoy via the web (A BRITISH INVENTION!) I'll be playing a dedication on tuesday and I hope you'll do the same on air to to ALL DJ's pirate or otherwise particularly remembering John Peel, Kenny Everett, Alan Freeman, and the continuing contribution of Brian Matthew. So play "Who knows where the time goes" by Fairport Convention,as I will be doin. Now after all this serious stuff, have a ball guys!!! Youve bloody earned it

Ian
I heard that John Peel's 'The Perfumed Garden', got more letters during its 3 month 'graveyard shift' run, than the rest of the Radio London DJ's put together..... It's appalling that rock music has been virtually censored from UK radio, and only allowed late night weekend slots when most are down the pub, while others are able to enjoy their own music on their own radios.

Kevin Doran - USA
Johnnie Walker: Re WHFS - I met you briefly when you were looking for a flat during your Washington DC stint and our mutual friend Steve Lorber thought we'd make good roommates. Alas, it never worked out. I'm now up in Hoboken New Jersey (birthplace of Frank Sinatra & Baseball), listening to you on the web. It's good to finally hear what you and Radio Caroline actually sounded like back in the day and an ocean away. Hope you and your son are better than well. Cheers and keep banging out the great tunes.

PAUL HOLLOW
Fantastic programmes, great to hear so many voices from the 60's.Please do it again sometime.

dave jenkison
to johnnie and all the the jocks this is as cool as it was in 67 - except the reception via the net is infinately better - this piece of legislation needs to be binned?

Nadiya McCarthy
I have so enjoyed listening to your programme today, it has brought back such happy and wonderful memories. I do hope this will not be the last time we celebrate such a great time in our history. The music is the best I have heard in a long time. Long may it live on. God bless you all.

mke rawson
Thanks for the memories. Can you repeat this every year.

Gary

Once again Pirate BBC Essex is Bringing on Back The Good Times. Sheer magic. Just know the feeling of loss will be as great when you pull the plug on Tuesday as it was when you did this back in 2004. The loss then was just like it was 40 years ago. And this even though we have music stations today. Trouble is they have too much format and no soul. Just don't make it the last time eh!All the best,JohnLeigh-on-SeaPS Pass my good wishes to my old friend Ray Clark

Alan Muster
Pirate BBC Essex has millions of listeners, quite amazing. I cannot believe that such massively popular radio is not wanted anymore. BBC Essex and the Pirate disk jockeys have absolutely recreated the sound we love.BBC Pirate Essex from the LV18 is now pirate radio history itself, and a very special chapter. It will bring back the happiest memories. For everyone, listeners and disk jockeys alike, it has been pure pleasure. Commercial broadcasters take note, the BBC is doing your job.

Sean Moyses
Hi! Don't remeber the closedown of the 60's pirates but was there in the 1980's when Laser and Caroline ruled the waves. Great project, well done!

PAUL HOLLOW
Fantastic programmes, great to hear so many voices from the 60's.Please do it again sometime.

Richard Wilson-Smith from Southampton
Great to hear Johhnie Walker on Pirate Radio Essex on the Internet, Well Done !!!!

Rick
Everyone's said it all ! Fantastic radio - just as I remember from '64 - '67 at College in Chelmsford.Big L & Caroline - we really were VERY lucky to be young then, at just the right time.I hope you'll be passing a copy of all these messages up to BBC management - you must find a way of keeping this going...Thanks for the memories...Rick, Bognor Sussex.

Matty Jackson in Leigh on Sea
Wow,amazing.i'm not old enough to have heard the the original but i'm a sixties vinyl obsesive and it's a treat for me to hear the sounds the way everyone heard them way back when.Much respect to all the dj's for the top tunes.

Mike Jarvill
Marvellous stuff - just what radio should be! Would love to be able to tape this stuff just like in the old days!

BRIAN WILLIAMS
FAB, FAB, FAB. Well done BBC Essex. It just takes me back to my youth. Superb.

Richard from Colchester
Thank you Steve, Ian, Tim et al. The whole experience is so overwhelming but also so sad. It reflects a time of good wholesome fun when music almost spoke for itself and the guys on board were like good friends (they still sound it and I'm amazed how their on-air presentation is identical to the reel-to-reel tapes I still have from the period).Sad because the yobs have now taken over and the period which is being recreated can never re-emerge.Let's all hope we can celebrate the 50th anniversary!

Edward Dickerson
Very very good this should be all year long, you are playing all the best music with the best presenters.

Audrey Forsythe
Its great to hear the music again brings back all the good old memories and great to hear Johhnie Walker again hope the sea stays calm for you all out there these next few days.

Jan Paff
Hi Johnnie! Am just blown away that I am listening to your guys in Brisbane Australia!! my class at St Bernards in Southend were avid listeners, hi to you all and thanks so much! jan

Martin Denman
You've definitely recreated the feeling of those offshore days - it was THE most fantastic period in British radio. The reworked jingles are perfect - reminding me of '66 and Swinging Radio England.

Clive Quilter
Great to hear many of the old Caroline team Particular liked the selection of music played by Rosko

dave jenkinson
