At 600 metres Kinder Scout is the highest point in the Peak District National Park. It is a high widswept plateau in the 'Dark Peak' area of the Peak District and has superb views across the surrounding countryside. The Kinder plateau rises steeply from the surrounding area and there are many rocky outcrops and crags including Crowden Head, the highest point in the Peak District. The Kinder River flows off the edge of the plateau in a spectacular waterfall called Kinder Downfall. This upland area includes the Woolpacks, a group of strangely shaped rocks created during the Ice Age. The area is a popular one for walkers, and Kinder has its place in rambling history - in 1932 some 400 to 500 ramblers set off from Bowden Bridge Quarry for the Mass Trespass onto Kinder Scout. They were protesting about the lack of access to one of the country's most dramatic landscapes. The protest was not in vain for some years later much of the Peak District was designated the first National Park in Britain. |
