BBC News, bodycam footage in the Henry Nowak case, June 2026

Summary of complaint

We received complaints from people who thought it was inappropriate for us to include the police bodycam footage in our reporting of the Henry Nowak case.

Our response

The harrowing circumstances surrounding the death of Henry Nowak have provoked a significant public and political debate about the issues this case has highlighted, with the actions of the police who attended the scene coming under particular scrutiny.  The bodycam footage, which was released by Hampshire Police with the permission of the Nowak family, is important in clarifying what took place on the night.

After serious consideration, we used limited, and carefully edited, versions of this footage in our output, which we believe was necessary to provide our audience with accurate context.  We fully appreciate that this material is extremely distressing, which is why we gave warnings reflecting this when using it in our reports and clearly signposted what it contained.

This case is currently being examined by the independent police watchdog, the IOPC, and will also be the subject of a jury inquest.  We will continue to follow developments and only include the police bodycam footage in our reporting when we believe it is editorially relevant, being mindful at all times to approach this aspect of our coverage with sensitivity.
