The Planets song
We have many planets in the solar system and THIS is the song to sing along to if you want to remember them. Get your inter-planetary head on and grab the mic!
The eight planets of the solar system
Horrible Science has a song for you all about the planets near Earth. How much did you already know about these planets? This song has some pretty cool facts!
Did you know...
Mercury is a rocky planet closest to the Sun. You wouldn't want to live there because it gets extremely hot! Mercury's solar day (sunrise to sunrise) is longer than a year (what??) because it rotates on its axis very slowly, taking 59 Earth-days, while orbiting the Sun very quickly, taking only 88 Earth-days.
Venus doesn't have a nice atmosphere for humans to live on either... it's full of mountains and rocks, but did you know you can see Venus from the night sky on Earth?
Earth is our home and has the perfect conditions to sustain life! This is because we're not too close and not too far from the Sun, so we're in what's called 'The Goldilocks Zone.'
Mars is the red planet, named by the Romans after their god of war. It never rains on Mars, but there are severe dust storms and lots of rocks! We have started space explorations on Mars using robots. Did you know one robot on Mars even sang 'Happy Birthday' to itself?
Jupiter is the 5th furthest planet from the Sun and is a gas-central! It's so gassy that it doesn't have solid surface, but it's still the largest and heaviest planet in our solar system, by far!
Saturn, you know it from its colourful rings. These rings are made of rock and ice... you wouldn't want to get caught up in that storm!
Uranus lies on its side (weird!) and is another gassy giant. We're getting further away from the Sun now, so Uranus is really cold! It even has huge diamonds floating on a sea of carbon. If you think the sea on Earth sparkles, we've got nothing on Uranus!
(Pluto used to be considered a planet, but got demoted because it doesn't have a strong and dominant gravitational force, which is one of the checklist items needed for a planet to be a planet! Sorry Pluto!)
LYRICS: Sing along with the Horrible Science Planets song!
Mercury, Venus, one and two
Earth makes three, that's home to you
Mars rocks in at number four
Jupiter, Saturn, there's two more
Uranus and Neptune then we're done
The eight planets of the solar system
Mercury is smallest and closest to the Sun
Living on this rocky planet would not be much fun
Temperature ranges are mighty severe
And get this, its day is twice as long as its year
Venus is called my evil twin
Yeah, it's not the kind of atmosphere you'd want to live in
It may look pretty in the evening sky
But this planet of volcanoes is selling you a lie
Third rock, Earth I'm the place you call home
Spinning beautiful and blue in the Goldilocks Zone
A planet with life yeah, that makes me unique
And I orbit round you every four weeks
You're crowding me, move!
Mars, the red planet at rock number four
The Romans named it after their god of war
A bone-dry planet where it never rains
The dust storms rage across its mountainous plains
Mercury, Venus, one and two
Earth makes three, that's home to you
Mars rocks in at number four
Jupiter, Saturn, there's two more
Uranus and Neptune then we're done
The eight planets of the solar system
Jupiter, the largest and fifth from the Sun
With its great red spot it's gas giant number one
Massive Saturn, doesn't it look nice?
With its shimmering rings made of rock and ice?
Uranus... Or Ur-ANUS
OK, you decide
What to call planet seven that lies on its side
This big gassy giant is as cold as can be
With huge diamonds floating on a carbon sea
Neptune is our last but not least number eight
If you don't like sunlight then this place is great
There was a time when we had a planet nine
Yeah, but it should be noted Pluto got demoted
Mercury, Venus, one and two
Earth makes three, that's home to you
Mars rocks in at number four
Jupiter, Saturn, that's two more
Uranus and Neptune and we're done
The eight planets of the solar system
All spinning round the burning Sun
The eight planets of the solar system
