Dom and Hamish, 20 miles in?

The long hard crawl

As part of Blast, we gave young people chance to go out live on the radio. This interview, with Dom and Hamish, describes their preparations to break the world crawling record on Midsummer Common last week...

Q: You’re trying to break the world crawling record. So how long are you trying to crawl for?
A: We’re planning to crawl for 60 kilometres to break the current world record of 58.
Q: Are you doing it for charity?
A: We’re hoping to raise about £15,000 for charity. Arthur Rank House which is a cancer hospice here in Cambridge, where my mum was cared for. Also, Katharine House Hospice which is where Hamish’s aunt was looked after, and Cancer Research UK.
Q: I hear that your knees were very sore for two weeks…
A: That’s right. We started off training without any knee pads and we found that the skin on your knees is quite tender. I (Dom) ended up having to have an operation so I spent three days in hospital having a piece of leg chopped off.
Q: Are you nervous about doing it?
A: Oh no. We’re ready. It’s been quite a long time coming. We’ve been training for quite a few months now, so it’s one of those things where we just need to get it started.
Q: So where have you been training?
A: We’ve been training up on Hampstead Heath and Hyde Park in London. We’ve been training in Cambridge a bit as well. We’ve been as far as the Yorkshire Dales, the Alps…everywhere we’ve been, we’ve been training really.
