Singing a Soundbite at BBC Blast

We bring the stage, you bring the talent

Blast 2007

Last Wednesday, the Blast truck landed on Parker's Piece. Over the next four days, nearly 200 young people dabbled in filming, singing and acting; many for the first time. This is the story of how we had a Blast...

A "blast" is defined as a highly exciting or pleasurable experience. BBC Blast helps 13 to 19 year olds to get creative. Staying true to the dictionary definition, BBC Blast becomes an event, a series of workshops where teenagers can try everything from script writing to street dancing.

Blast Cambridge took place on Parker's Piece last weekend. With Wimbledon running two days behind schedule, there were fears the event would be a washout. However, by Thursday the skies were clear, just as the truck opened its doors for the first time.

Normally radio shows are recorded in soundproof rooms and deadly silence. There was no such luxury in our marquees, as another group performed a rock classic in the "tent next door". Even that seemed quiet by Friday, as our MCs took centre stage. In any given minute, you could hear all the following...

In the more sedate environment of the Blast Truck, heads were down as participants edited a variety of films and audio. One of the most popular workshops took place on Saturday, as twelve teens produced their own Manga characters. Meanwhile, community group Integr8 made their own music videos. The results were sensational.

...so if you wish you'd been at Blast 2007, don't despair! We'll be back next year, let's hope the sun returns as well.
