It has been a long afternoon to the west of Ambrose Light.

Bristol has been inching west while Portsmouth has been on a charge. Finally Bristol has picked up a breeze and at 2002 she had 9.2 miles to run.

Portsmouth has cut the deficit from 138 miles, 48 hours ago, to a mere 50 miles now.

Nothing is certain but it is expected Bristol will cross the line at approximately 2120GMT.

Jersey and London remain in a close duel for third place.

New York, New York, Nearly, Nearly

It has been nothing but stop go all day for Bristol Clipper.

After thinking the Gulf stream would take him past New York as they struggled in the calms, the wind finally returned and Skipper Bob Beggs reckoned that they would finish at about 0600 GMT this morning.

It was not to be. Yet again they have lost the wind and are now ghosting through a large fleet of weekend recreational fishing boats.

They achieved 147 miles in the last 24 hours and have watched helplessly as the rest of the fleet make massive inroad into their lead.

Bristol Blues

The good times came to an end for Bristol last night when she suddenly found herself drifting helplessly to the northeast as the wind deserted her.

The great charge was over as the sails flapped as the overcast skies threatened more torrential rain.

Wallowing may be fun for hippos but it was a quiet evening in Bristol without much humour as they could feel their giant lead being gnawed away by their pursuers.

After racing hard for 4000 miles and 20 days they were becalmed within in 250 miserly miles from the finish.

Meanwhile in New York the team at Liberty Landing are standing by to receive the yachts.
