Goodmorning..

Hi It's Karnie on the blog this morning...

I finally got the hang of getting here a little before I'm due to start..just get up really really early and plant yourself at a train station so you have so many options that you have NO chance of getting stuck on a delayed train into London! Well that method worked today at least! Hope you are all well..

England are out of the European championships! The country that "sold" football to the world failed last night to qualify for a major tournament. The country's coached has been sacked. Is English football just not good enough? And where does it all go wrong?
<a

Middle East Peace talks, Condoleeza Rice says talks at Annapolis (next week) represents a big step forward..politicians can talk all the want but are they really listening to what the people in the Palestinian territories and Israel really want?

In South Carolina in the United States political consultants will go to great extremes to smear the the character of political campaigners. Flyers appeared on cars calling Obama a muslim extremist, a theory he was forced to deny during his campaign tour. An anonymous email claims Hillary Clinton was having a lesbian affair with her aide, Huma Abedin...Rob Shealy a Republican consultant says: We're going to see new lows in dirty politics that would have been unthinkable." Outrageous or just simply...an essential political tool?

"President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad behaviour is dangerous for Iran". These are comments coming from a hardline newspaper within the country. Such a direct personal attack against President Ahmadinejad is rare in official media in Iran. Is this criticism reassuring and does it take away the feeling of apprehension about Iran's nuclear development programme?

Marriage in the UK is at the centre of political debate. With the politicians agreeing that stability is hugely important for children. A columnist here in the UK talks about: "Why we all need to commit". Have we lost the way in relationships and is stability too boring?

Hi It's Karnie doing the morning blog...Here are some ideas to chew over..

As the US reveals Annapolis as the venue for the next peace conference, writer, Seth Freedman who was ready to to play his part by signing up to the Israeli Defence Force says, "Occupation Breeds Terror and Israel must leave the territories and must do so soon." Is this the only and best solution in the middle east?

Up to thousand displaced Iraqis are returning home to Iraq each day. This is an indication that things are getting better. Does this mean the Bush administration was right to invade Iraq after all?

Should we feel resentful about caring for our elderly parents? An article here in the UK has sparked a debate about caring for parents when they get old. A very frank statement was made by a writer saying. "I resent her (her parent) for still being alive." Should children have an absolute duty to care for their parents? Can children ever justify this resentment?

Goodmorning!!

Hi it's Karnie again...

Another late train but thankfully I got here just in the nick of time! It's quite a rush getting in earlier than usual..more people, more cars, buses...congestion and delays. All typical of city life. The weather in London is slightly..only slightly better i.e. it's not raining..yet :)

A week later and workers in France are still on strike. They are protesting at pension reforms proposed by President Sarkozy. Are strikes still valid? Do they still serve their purpose? And how effective are they?

Students at oxford University are against rightwing speakers at the Oxford Union. Should there be a platform for racists?

Heather Mills has launched Viva's drive to promote a vegan lifestyle with a call to start drinking rats', cats' and dogs' milk...Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called for all plastic bags to be banned from the high street..Environment friendly ideas gone mad? Or can little suggestions make a big difference?

The Queen and the Duke of Edingburgh are flying to Malta to celebrate their 60th anniversary..60 years is a long time and indicates a strong relationship..so what are the secrets to a long marriage?

Ahead of the Middle East talks in the US next week..we ask is there a way forward and is peace in the middle east achievable? How about creating our own Middle East panel on WHYS?

Archbishop Desmond Tutu says the Anglican church is obsessed with the issue of gay priests. He said it should be focusing on global problems such as Aids. Do you agree with him?

An American therapist says, "we should always tell the truth no matter how unpalatable!" He claims radical honesty will change your life. Do you agree with him? Are you able to tell your friend the absolute truth even if he/she looks older? Tired? Is drinking too much? Is honesty really the best policy?

Monday 19th November..lots to talk about...

Hi It's Karnie attempting to set the agenda for the first time..It;s a gloomy day here in London. I tried to get here as early as possible to get the morning blg going but was stuck on delayed trains. I commute from Berkshire every day, which is about 30 mins drive outside London, so it takes me that bit extra to get in each day..BUT I had the opportunity to have a good read of the newspapers tghis morning and this is what I have come up with..Quite a few things have caught my eye ...let us know what you think and what you'd like to talk about....

Asean and Burma
The Association of South East Asian Nations has rejected a US Senate call to suspend Burma from the organisation. Secretary general On Keng Kong says the organisation did not believe in a confrontational approach. He says: "It's like you as a parent, if you have a troubled child, do you say, 'Go to the sanatorium, go out of the house, I don't want to talk to you'?"
"Our approach is not to take such a confrontational, drastic action, especially when it doesn't yield good results," he added.

What do you think? Do you agree with him? Critics says that sanctions imposed by the west do not work..what should ASEAN do to resolve the crisis in Burma?

This caught my eye this morning...US ELECTIONS
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article2896710.ece
The US campaign has been tainted by a "dirty tricks scandal" agents of Hilary Clinton say they have obtained unspecified "scandalous information" about Mr Obama. His campaign have challenged Mrs Clinton to make the information public Is this a desperate attempt to smear the campaign of a strong candidate? OR if the allegation is true..should it be disclosed? Dirty tricks or simply the way the world of politics operates?

Fisher Island
America's wealthiest area (once home to stars like Oprah Winfrey, Jula Roberts, Robert De Niro) has come under the spotlight...Fisher Island, better known as Fantasy Island is in the midst of a racial segregation row...Workers who are employed by wealthy residents on the Island say they are being discriminated against.
In 2007 should these workers made to feel like second class citizens just because they are not as wealthy? Or is this kind of divide inevitable because of the wealth divide? Is Fisher Island being left behind the rest of America because of it's racial practice?

Love...
Is love over rated? In a week when Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edingburgh celebrate their 60 weeding anniversary we look at the subject of love! 60 years is a long time..is this just good old fashioned love..It's definitely stood the test of time. Marriage these days is very fragile. Divorce rates are on the rise in many countries.. A BBC documentary screened later this week will claim that love iS over rated and your family has the best judgement in deciding who your life partner should be...Do you agree
Http://observer.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,2212886,00.html

Bangladesh
We looked at Bangladesh on friday. The BBC's Mark Dummet in Dhakka gave us an account of the situation there. We also spoke with Alex Whitney from World vision (the organisation offering shelter to thousands of people affected by the cyclone...BUT the death toll is said to rise...many countries have pledged aid to Bangladesh. Should we revisit Bangladesh?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/11/19/wcyclone119.xml&CMP=ILC-mostviewedbox

Whaling...
21 years ago japan halted it's commercial whaling industry..but continues to whale, claiming it does this for scientific reasons...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7099720.stm
Tokyo agrues, whaling is an ancient Japanese tradition..Do they have a right to practice their tradition?

The Balkans
We'll also look at Kosovo and Bosnia..
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,2212854,00.html

Arnaud who's a WHYS listener is Rwandan now living in Cameroon. He sent us an emails, asking: "Is peace and poverty under dictatorship better than bad democracy?". Arnaud says, for him, the answer is a resounding yes. But he wants to know if you agree with him. So, wherever you are in the world, let us know if you do. On today's progamme we spoke with people from Iraq, Russia, Poland, Zimababwe, Pakistan Congo and Morocco..to try and get some answers..
And tell us what you think about the case of the missing 4 year-old Madeleine McCann who disappeared from her parent's holiday apartment in Portugal in May. If you're in Portugal, we'd like to know what you think of the way your police and judicial system have been portrayed AND do you think the British media has been too critical of the way in which the Portugese have dealt with this?

Hi it's Karnie...you must have an opinion on this...and if you do, why not join the live discussion on World Have Your Say today? We're asking..are women who decide not to have children, selfish?

French writer, Corinne Maier's book "FORTY REASONS NOT TO HAVE CHILDREN" has shot into the bestseller's list in France. The book appeals both to childless women irritated by the idea that they must have babies and to parents frustrated by the sacrifices of bringing up their children. We will be talking to Corrine on today together with other women from across the world.

We'd like to know what your thoughts are..do you have children? If you do, do you regret having them? What do you think about women who leave it too late? And do you think women who choose NOT to have children are selfish?

Corrine says "there are moments when I bitterly regret having kids" - does this sound familiar or can you relate to this? Or do you think her message is too provocative and possibly unfair because she is a mother and has had the chance to at least enjoy that experience?

We'd love to here from you... Tell us if you'd like to take part in this discussion today call us: (0044) 207 557 0635.

Were we being naive?

Steve, a regular listener in the US, says we were naive in reading out a message to Alan Johnston (our abducted Gaza correspondent) from a prisoner in US custody. Read the original letter and our email exchange with Steve, and tell us what you think about it.

Last week, we received this letter in the post:

My name is Ali, as an Arab American businessman post 9/11, I've been detained and remained in detention for five years now in country jails in America with false charges, no bail, no trial, and no sentencing. I know someday I'll make it out, so will you, stay strong, seek help with patient perseverance and prayrs (sic). It's a test, a difficult one, don't fail it, we'll make it ....It's a matter of time. Miss your tender voice that I only knew through the darkness of my cells.
NOTE
Sorry for writing in pencil, that's what's allowed. May be someday you'll cover my ordeal which remains a travisty to justice in the land of justice........I've been moved when I learned that Allen is still alive. May be, just maybe my above message to him will boost his endurance and keep him going. Thank you.......
My main intention at this point is to deliver my message to Allen and to be amongst those whom posted their say on the air.
Ali

We read the first part of this letter on the programme on Friday last week. Steve, who listens to World Have Your Say in the US, then sent this email:

Come on, please, someone in jail has access to the BBC? And if the guy was being held on claims of terrorism or being connected to it, as he claims unfounded, why is he in a COUNTY jail????? Why did the BBC treat that comment as if it were somehow fact? Clearly it was an attack to try to make the US look bad, by someone who is antiamerican, and I have no doubt that his claim is completely false.

I sent Steve this reply:

Hi Steve
Thanks for your message about the comment on Alan Johnston that we read on Friday.
You can find more details about Ali Aladimi on this blog, maintained by one of his supporters. Mr Aladimi wrote us a letter which we received in London. Having checked out his identity, established that he was a real person, and had indeed written to us, we then decided to read out part of his letter making it clear we were quoting from it. I don't think that's the same thing as treating his comment as if it were fact. Clearly, you could argue that he stands to gain from having his case highlighted in this way, but equally the fact that someone in jail feels a parallel with Alan Johnston's situation and is moved to write a letter about it is also interesting regardless of the rights or wrongs of his case. Best wishes, David.

Steve wrote back:

So you would read anything on there???? From what I recall, he said he had been in jail, without charge, for years, in a local jail. He was trying to make out sound like he was some kind of political prisoner, like guantanamo. This is what he was charged with, despite him denying that he's been charged with anything: It states he was found in possession of stolen goods in his warehouse. He was earlier charged with having millions of tablets of pseudoephedrine, which is used to synthesize methamphetamine, a drug that we are having serious problems with in the US, and is incredibly harmful. For me, just to buy one box of pseudeophedrine, a legal product, I have to fill out a log book, to buy 10 tablets. He had MILLIONS of tablets. Gee, I wonder what he was planning to do with those....If you google Aladimi's name, you'll find posts defending him, someone claiming to be his lawyer, excused it as basically getting in over his head in business deals. Also, the FBI has been investigating the cigarettes issues, and while they haven't been able to convict anyone on using the funds to support terrorist organizations, they have been convicted on not reporting large deposits of $10k or more, which is required by federal law. If you have access to the National Geographic Channel, there is a show called FBI Takedown, that features my friend and a bust he made on that very topic. Aladimi wasn't truthful in his letter, because he said he hadn't even been charged, and has HAS been charged.

To which I replied:

Steve
His letter didn't deny he'd been charged, but said he'd been detained "with false charges".
Here's a suggestion: how about I post our correspondence about this on our blog, together with the various links, and we'll let people see for themselves?

So, were we right to read out the letter? Let us know what you think.....

LIVE G8 talks and Paris Hilton released

We're on air with Peter Dobbie today and you talking about the G8 - is it relevant to your lives? Do you think these meetings ever achieve anything? Or are our expectations if them just too high? What do you want these leaders to be talking about?

And Paris Hilton's released - the most read story on the BBC website and we've already had around 600 emails in an hour to the BBC site about this story. She's been allowed to leave prison after just 3 days on medical reasons, she'll now be under house arrest. Has she got off lightly because of who she is? There are some who argue that she's in fact been unfairly treated and given too harsh a sentence because of her status. We'll be talking to a US criminal defence attorney who thinks just that.

What do you reckon? You can post your comments here, call us on +44 20 70 83 72 72, text your thoughts on +44 77 86 20 60 80 - remember add 'Call me back' if you want to be on air, otherwise you can always email at worldhaveyoursay@bbc.co.uk

And we've had these text messages

Lubna in Iraq says "I believe the G 8 is an occasion where the leaders of the free world meet to prove that they're good-looking in front of the cameras!"

Alistair in Prague writes "Evidently American justice is an urban myth. If the law is to be respected at all it must be respected by all."

And an anonymous text says "Too much corruption in africa, we should not give money to them."

Jim in Gambia writes "G 8 we want poverty change not climate change in africa"

An anonymous Iraqi texted to say "Hi there, do iraqis have a right to assess the G 8? If yes, i wonder what did the G8 do for my country, nothing but lies and false promises."

Banks in Amsterdam says "George W. Bush is the Paris Hilton of international politics. All show and no substance."

And in the emails coming in

CW in Poland sent this quote "Those who have the gold make the rules."

Lia in Boston writes "You can't print my initial reaction so here's what i'll say; It's good to be white and uber wealthy in America! I however, happen to be neither of those . . . "

Anto in Brittany says "ONE law for the rich, And one law for the poor. DISGRACEFUL? a buddy of mine had the same coviction and got 12 month in prison; SHE should be sent back inside"

Gitanjali writes from Sri Lanka "It is funny that Paris Hilton should develop a medical condition at the prospect of spending her full term in jail. It is funnier to know officials fell for her story."

Jan in San Jose says "It is so great that the American penal institution treats everyone the same, rich or poor. I have never heard of a poor person getting out of jail for medical reasons. Do they expect the readers of the press to believe that she had a medical condition? If it was a medical emergency, and they did not have the facilities for her care, she could have been treated as an outpatient at the appropriate medical facility that serves the normal jail population."

Adrian in Milan believes "This is a slap in the face to the people who actually have to pay for their crimes!"

Michael in Boca Raton thinks "Just another example of how our justice system can be abused and how our society promotes bad behavior. I'm appalled at how easy it is to "snow" the "authorities" into this type of action. It's no wonder why so many children have no sense of responsibility."

Stephanie in Vancouver writes "This Paris Hilton situation sickens me. Apart from mental chewing gum entertainment, this girl offers nothing to society!! Now is she getting out of jail early on doctors advice? Give me a BREAK. This ridiculous summation of her antics proving again there is no justice system."

Mugo in Nairobi says "That sounds just GREAT! Whilst the rest of us non-celebrities serve our full jail terms in custody and receive all needed medical attention from government doctors in prison. She gets to go home and rest after just three days - which we shall call five days for the record. But of course she will be confined to her home, must wear an ankle bracelet and will not be allowed out for parties or social functions. No mention of the fact that the social functions can come to her! and that she probably lives in a home that will help her forget about prision, and her offence, within the first hour! "

Tom in the UK emailed "This is an absolute debacle. The justice system functions on the fundamental point that everyone is treated equally. Hilton's escape from prison on her the basis of a medical condition is unbelievable! There are many people in prisons with medical conditions, and I am sure that Hilton's complaint is no worse than anyone else's."

Helena in Colorado writes "Is the prison hospital unable to handle one socialite jailbird? This is unequal justice. I am embarrassed! I just hope that the next time she is caught drink driving, that she doesn't end up harming an innocent person."

Spencer in Portland says "I'm hoping this year's G8 can provide entertainment value to match last year's Bush/Blair open-mic gaffe. Seeing my president talking with his mouth full was, for me, a defining political moment."

TJ writes "I think the G8 should change its first letter to H for hypocrisy. Honestly, I really don’t understand how anyone who has paid attention to American politics can really take seriously any organization of which our president is part. One can only promise to take meaningful action so many times before losing the faith of those who are still listening."

Tom in Oregon thinks "The rich and powerful nations got that way by creating poverty in the lesser nations. They are not about to do anything real about poverty."

Kurt in Texas says "The G8 is not set up or prepared to deal with political corruption in Africa. Specifically, Nigerians (and other African nations) need to take responsibility for the corruption of their own governments. The G8 can only deal with nations via the governments that exist, corrupt or not."

Tina in Portland emailed to say "I understand people’s frustration at topics important to them being left out of the G8 discussion, however, shouldn’t the world leaders speak as often as possible? Even if the G8 leaders only discuss climate change this year, they are covering a topic important to all of us. I think it is worth holding the G8 conference, and I think world leaders should have as many avenues for discussion as possible."

Armands in Washington writes "With regards to the agreement by the leaders of the G8 to reduce emissions by 2010 - none of the leaders will be be in power through 2050, much less the next ten years. This agreement is utterly irrelevant and supports the fact that this meeting is simply a cliche gathering. "

Andrew in Australia says "Paris-ite Hilton has been released from jail after only 3 days... what a surprise that this over-valued nothing is now free of her obligation. With a blatant disregard for the law, why has the law done her a favour. I wish for 2 things, that she could have just rotted in her jail cell for the full term and less likely, that such a worthless individual just go away and never be so in the headlines. But our society just adores and celebrates such valueless people."

Jay writes "How can Africa's economies grow when countries like the US and their own governments keep undermining them at every step?"

Ellen emailed "Since the U.S. Justice Department is unwilling to punish rich criminals, the job falls to society: Paris Hilton needs to be treated, by her peers and the public, as a criminal---stop photographing her, talking about her, treating her as a celebrity. She is famous for no reason, and should now be treated as infamous, for a reason."

Darfur, Iraq impotence, and the h Word

Peter Dobbie here -- with the latest on what's on World Have Your Say, today Wednesday.

Something of a mixed bag:

We're kicking off with the connection between Darfur, Google and your PC.

Using satellite imagery, photos and eyewitness accounts, the terrible crisis in Sudan's Darfur region is being brought into the homes of millions of internet users. The Holocaust Museum in Washington DC has teamed up with Google's internet mapping service to try to stop the genocide. Does it make a difference, having this information delivered to you in a different way ?

Check out the web site, have a think and then come on the programme and tell us what you've learned. Has it changed your perception of what's happening there? By combining the museum's Darfur database with clickable images on the ground, they're trying to create what they're calling a "community of conscience". Some of it's strong stuff: there's one picture in there where you think it's just little dots on the ground -- what you're apparently looking at is hundreds of burned out mud huts, the handy-work we're told of the Janjaweed militia.

Another related topic today is Iraq, or how we (the outside world) handle our intervention in a crisis such as Iraq. The aid agency Oxfam today is saying that the outside world intervening in global crises is not the issue, but the process of involvement has to follow strict principles. Is that right ? Isn't that what the UN is for -- and can you apply a one size fits all way of doing things to different regions, different people and different wars ?

Next, answer me a question, please, someone ! What does "nappy-headed" mean? If you come on air and call me a "nappy head" would I be insulted? Well, I wouldn’t be because I don’t know what it means, but you get the basic idea. What we're discussing is American shock jocks -- and specifically the New York show host Don Imus, who has been disciplined because he combined that little ditty (nappy headed) with another insult (which I'm not repeating here !) and aimed it at a female black basketball team. The blogs are going crazy for this one so we want to know what you think -- when is going too far simply unacceptable? Are these radio jocks just doing what they're paid to do ? And is a two week suspension enough of a punishment? Indeed, should he be punished at all ?

Check out the blog: bbcnews.com/worldhaveyoursay

text us on + 44 77 86 20 60 80

or call us on + 44 20 70 83 72 72

It's your programme, you set the agenda so do get in touch.

Talk to you later, Peter :-)

Friday 30th March - LIVE

Hello everyone, it's Hasit here at World Have Your Say. Tonight we talked about the standoff between Iran and Britain over the capture of British naval personnel. Now the European Union has got involved, demanding their release, and the Iranians have broadcast yet another 'confession' from one of the crew. We also talked about Heather Mills - Sir Paul McCartney's estranged wife is doing really well as a dancer on American TV, despite losing part of her leg in an accident. And finally, is a giant chocolate Jesus offensive?

First up, Iran and the UK:

Kiru in Jamaica:

"This situation is no good for anyone involved. Iran doesn't gain a thing, and neither does the UK. Both sides need to dial back the egos."

Steve in USA:

"What is diplomatic about showing pows on television? Forcing them to make statements, and making the female one wearing a head cover?"

John and Linda, Minnesota, USA:

"Britain should involve the world in the problem, but I feel she should go to war if all of her personnel are not unconditionally released immediately. I feel Iran will release them because it does not want a war, but influence in the region. They are gambling that the world community will not permit the West, i.e. America or Britain to attack them. Talking is a waste of time. Action will guarantee the life and safety of prisoners."

Kim Olson:

"Please, there is no reason why Men should be able to serve on the front line and women shouldn't. We can handle everything that a man can handle, don't start with this ridiculous debate again."

Jason, Portland, USA:

"Iran has a napoleon complex. The only thing these people understand is force. Make Iran sorry for what it has done. They're cowards."

Riz in Sydney:

"People are talking about the Geneva Convention when it comes to Iran. I really wonder why that doesn't apply to other nations violating it."

Sanusi from Prague:

"They should use diplomatic means to settle the issue. Instead of involving UN and EU"

Paul Leslie, Michigan, USA:

"When are we as a global community going to recognize that Iran is a country that is going to need to be dealt with at some point. In 1979 Iran takes Americans captive for over 400 days; Iran supports terrorist organizations in Lebanon which has caused much unrest in that country; Iran is in process of building Nuclear weapons; they are told to stop by the U.N. and they just thumb their nose at the global community and now they kidnap 15 British soldiers and display them on television."

Tanweer in London:

"I believe that the British Govt should apologise and get the sailors back. It is true that Iran is provoking the West. I also believe that they are ready for any attack. They want to drag the Americans and Brits into Iran and give them a good beating"

Gerritt in Portland:

"The assumption has to be that Iran is correct because Britian has changed the debate to treatment, not location of the vessel. Does that justify potentially coerced statements and TV exposure. Or a media feeding frenzy? No, of course not! Of course, as an American and general prisoner of the corrupt Bush administration who am I to talk?"

Madison in Virginia:

"Is attacking and invading Iraq in line with international law? Is this civilized behavior? How about the dodgy dossiers conjured up in the race to invade country. And then, how about British colonies? Was that a civilizing influence?"

Mohammed in Nigeria:

"It is very clear that the British soldiers are at fault. But iran is being blamed because it is a Muslim nation"

Robin in Portland:

"The US and Britain can no longer claim the moral high ground in matters of holding prisoners without pressing charges. We in the US engage in the same practices that shock us when our enemies engage in them."

Bruce Grey in Sydney:

"Iran is like any other rogue regime including Nazi Germany - they lie, manipulate and taunt their victims"

Abdeliah:

"Should UK internationalize the dispute? This seems to be the best answer. It should first take all the possible legal and diplomatic channels before embarking on any "serious" action. This can be an opportunity, if diplomacy works, for both sides to soften their positions and bring this crisis to an end."

Kale from Kampala:

"Iran has never been a civilised nation. They have been cruel since time immemorial."

Hassan from Freetown

"Did I hear Iran accusing Britain's behaviour as a nineteenth century super power? What about them acting as Al Qaeda or any terrorist group?"

Karo Umukoro, Nigeria.

"I am not offended at any portrait or artistic impression of Jesus, since no one really knows how Jesus looks like."

Karta Yu Tema, Ghana.

"Hello BBC, I would like to know why the UK and the EU are not treating the British servicemen's case as an abduction?"

Anon from Gambia

"Britain must apologise to Iran to pave way for the release of its prisoners as they confessed, obviously trespassed into Iranian waters. Questioning the authenticity of the naval personnel confessions is hypocritical compared to the Pentagon's releasing of false confessions from innocent captives at Hell Bay in Cuba where video footage was not shown. The BBC must stop this bias reporting or else listeners shall soon be convinced by Mugabe's allegations against you."

Bwaya in Uganda

"UK & EU must know that Iran is a sovereign state! UK must apologise and promise Iran it won't happen again. Blair, it's time to be straight."

P Chinthuli in Malawi

"The likes of Blair and Bush will never spend a penny on apologies. This shows that they are far from saying sorry to Iran for the alleged trespass."

Karo Umukoro

"I don't know why Britain feels arrogant to apologise to Iran despite trespassing. Yet they want to be peacemaker around the world!"

.From Moses in Benin City,Nigeria

"I wonder why the hullabaloo about British terrorists captured in Iranian waters. They should be kept in an Iranian version of the Guantanamo Bay until they are tried under Iranian anti-terrorism law"

Dingiswayobanda,Malawi.

"The Iranians want to win public sympathy in the UK for the detained marines. Hence pressure will increase on BLAIR to withdraw from IRAQ."

John in Nigeria

"Iran is the next problem in the Middle East."

Joy in Oregon, USA:

"Someone was obviously where they should not have been. If it wasn't the Brits, then it was the Iranians. Why isn't anyone making an issue of the Iranians being in territorial waters not their own if the Brits are telling the truth about their location when captured?"

Taylor in Australia:

"Let the sailors go. Complain to the UN if you can prove what you are saying and then let the International community decide."

Dr Affia in Nigeria:

"Iranians are a people that can easily be irritated into war especially with the western world. The British should handle them WISELY"

Jack in Cleveland:

"No amount of technological proof of where the sailors were abducted will change Iranian policy.Tony Blair should offer the world a choice: Suspend trade with Iran and continue banking in London or trade with Iran and bank in Tehran."

Next we talked about Heather Mills:

John in Cleveland:

"Yes, we in the U.S. unfortunately know who this spotlight hogging, gold digging, wannabe is. How else do you explain her on a reality show even if it's for "charity"?"

Steve in USA:

"Heather Mills will be an inspiration for American women who are incredibly materialistic and intiate the vast majority of divorces, and the divorce rate is over 50% now."

Andrew in Australia:

"I don't know the woman, but she is certainly making the most of her new found celebrity status. She lost a leg.. so?"

Thursday 29th March - LIVE

Evening all. It's Hasit here in the World Have Your Say office in London. Tonight we talked about the British naval personnel who are still being held in Tehran. It was thought a female officer would be released soon, but that doesn't look so likely now. We also discussed the continuing problems in Zimbabwe - 14 African countries have been meeting in Tanzania to try and find a way forward. And an American blogger has stopped writing on her website after being made a victim of 'cyber-bullying'. Last, but not least, our Gaza correspondent Allan Johnston is still missing, and we're going to keep reading out your messages of support until he turns up safe and sound.

First up, the diplomatic crisis between Iran and Britain. We had callers from both countries talking to each other, and plenty of messages from around the world.

Lubna in Iraq:

"Hi folks, I believe that iran behaved unreasonably about this crisis. As a muslim, i believe Allah would never accept insulting prisoners"

Anon:

"The UK should stop acting like the 54th state of the US, & apologise to Iran as Bush can't be of help to Blair"

Shakhoor:

"I think there are a lot of little children playing at soldiers in the latest hostage crisis."

Paul:

"Isn't Iran a puppet of Russia? Why would Putin want to hold British military personnel hostage?"

Tom, USA:

"The British are in Iraq under false pretenses and lies, let alone operating anywhere near Iranian waters. Blair should offer the apology requested and get this stupid affair ended immediately."

James, USA:

"I say the British should just apologize and get the sailors back home. Lose a little face, but save your troops and end a stalemate."

Riz in Sydney:

"I think the instability in Iraq has pushed Bush n Blair to adopt 'Plan B'.. 'Intimidate Iran'"

Kim says:

"Another war, fabulous idea. It's served us so well in the past. That's not the way to solve problems!"

Jamie Carney:

"How could anybody say that Britain and the US could win a war against Iran when we have failed in Iraq? War has never been the answer."

Don:

"You continually refer to Iran as "capturing" the sailors not "arresting" them. Thugs, murderers and kidnappers "capture", while security officials "arrest". Your own reports are further demonizing the Iranians which is not helpful."

Joe, New York City

"The Iranian leaders should take note that neither diplomatic nor military confrontations are won through pride. If the Iranians don't cave only their people will lose through public humiliation or physical harm."

Sanusi in Prague says:

"The British government should dialogue with the Iranian government to avoid another war in the Gulf"

The Great Scantini:

"There is so much bias in this prog that the only logical support lies with suicide bombers in Iraq and the revolutionary guards"

Erin in Detroit:

"In relation to what the caller said about the regime falling in Iran, the same thing is going on with George Bush. It seems as if many people think that this is a game of battleship. Who can sink who first. For someone to suggest that the US or the UK bomb their refineries is terrible. As an American, i do not want a war with Iran."

Phillipe in France:

"The British/Iranian problem probably started with a local difficulty ie somebody making a navigational error. Lets step back and drop the angst."

Anonymous:

"I wonder why the hullabaloo about British terrorists captured in Iranian waters. They should be kept in an Iranian version of d Guantanamo Bay until they are tried under Iranian anti-terrorism law."

Elton in Liberia:

"What I don't understand is how did those well trained Brits allow themselves get caught? Especially knowing what iran is capable of!"

Moses in Nigeria:

"The broadcast of footage of the British sailors is unacceptable. But it is acceptable to show late Saddam in his underpants!"

Chingaipe from Zambia:

"Iran deliberately picked British Sailors to embarrass the civilised World. Let the politicians in London apologise and bring this to end."

Robert in Uganda:

"What were the British soldiers doing there so far from Britain? Didn't they & the US also break some Conventions in going 2 war? Why should you wave the banner of UN Conventions whenever Westerners are in trouble? What about the Iranians held in Iraq by the US?"

Obi in Nigeria:

"Iran wants a war. If the UK attacks Iran, it must use maximum force. Iran wants to humiliate the UK .its part of a regional power game."

Ado says:

"Nothing lasts forever, even the might of the US and its allies."

Muhammad in Ghana:

"Iran has the right to guard and protect her maritime borders"

Paul in Mozambique:

"Why is that UK and US are always involved in war controversies? The most dangerous regimes are in London and Washington, not in Iran."

After the news at half past, we moved on to Zimbabwe, with plenty of callers in that country and around Africa:

Tedla Asfaw:

"Who has the right to choose and replace the prime minister of England or the president of USA? It is the British or American citizens not neighboring Europeans or for that matter our neighbor Canada or Mexico. Why this is different in Africa. Why ask neighboring countries to give an ultimatum to Mugabe?"

Adam in Portland, Oregon, USA:

"Zimbabwe is an African problem. The US/UK should do nothing more than support Democratic processes in theory and urge UN oversight at the most. However, the people in Zimbabwe should remember that it was pressure from the US and UK on the Rhodesian government that helped put Mugabe in power in the first place."

Pat in Zimbabwe:

"This despot and his cronies are murderers and should be brought to justice. They massacred 20 thousand innocent people in the early 80s and got away with it. Now they do as they please with impunity!"

Martin, Amsterdam

"Zimbabwe is 3 nations: shona, ndebele and white - why pretend it's some western 'country?"

Tommy:

"Mugabe has been in power for far too long. You would never see Mexico take the United States President on or question his legitimacy because you can't be president for more than eight years."

Thomas in Chicago, US writes:

"Talks on Zimbabwe aren't enough at this moment.Talks have failed us in Sudan, Iran and Israel. Let action be applied."

Anonymous:

"Mugabe may be dictatorial, but since britain is involved i will give him my support."

Mansour in Monrovia:

"The West is behind the problem in Zimbabwe. Please, African leaders wake up and solve it the African way."

Chioma in Lagos:

"I'm really angry with African Leaders! Why are they so greedy & insensitive! Robert Mugabe should leave office and start thinking of making Peace with God!"

Anonymous:

"why is it that the MDC only ever talk about wanting power? And you BBC guys always condemn Mugabe and never look at the good that his government has done"

Next, a prominent blogger said she's been forced to stop posting on the web because she's been getting death threats. Kathy Sierra has had gruesome photoshopped images of her put on other websites. She wants the blogosphere to combat the culture of abuse online.

Riz in Sydney wrote to us again:

"With technology getting this advanced, i wonder if something like 'e-law' is possible?"

Jason in Wisconsin

"This is the price we pay when we allow complete anonymity on the internet. Death threats are rare but any internet user is aware of the prolific problem known as Trolls. There is no escape."
