Events are now under way to mark The Archers' 60th anniversary.

Although the show's national debut was on 1 January 1951, it was preceded by a week of pilot episodes in May/June 1950, on the BBC Midlands Home Service.

In celebration of this first appearance of the Archer family, listeners and local dignitaries recently assembled at the BBC's Mailbox studios to meet production staff, writers and actors.

The visitors toured the Archers studio and tried their hand at a specially-written scene - including the sound effects.

Traditional tape is not used for recording, but to simulate straw underfoot

The evening ended with a question and answer session chaired by Midlands
Today presenter Nick Owen. Archers editor Vanessa Whitburn, Timothy
Bentinck (David), Felicity Finch (Ruth) and scriptwriter Mary Cutler
took a wide range of questions - but as ever declined to reveal any
future storylines!

The following weekend, the official fan club Archers Addicts organised an event at the Town and Country Show in Malvern - very much Archers territory. Activities ranged from wellie wanging and ferret racing to barn dancing and a gala dinner.

As the national anniversary approaches, there will be more events and activities, which of course we'll publicise on this website.
