<p>Now, in his latest video, our guest contributor <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/2010/11/bbc_techie_world_record_holder.html">Geoff Marshall</a> seeks to find out if you can really go online when you're underground...</p>

	<title>BBC techie record holder turned transport filmmaker</title>
	<description><![CDATA[<p>A few weeks ago Mind the Gap featured a <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/2010/10/thames_clippers_in_the_ugc_spo.html">UGC video about the Thames Clipper</a> from guest contributor, Geoff Marshall, whose day job is an Interactive Operations Engineer for the BBC.</p>

<p>Today, we feature another video from <a href="http://twitter.com/geofftech">Geoff</a> and he talks about why he started making the videos, why he hates people moaning about London transport and his former Tube world record.</p>

<div id="marshall_25_11_10" class="player" style="margin-left:40px"> <p>In order to see this content you need to have both <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/webwise/askbruce/articles/browse/java_1.shtml" title="BBC Webwise article about enabling javascript">Javascript</a> enabled and <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/webwise/askbruce/articles/download/howdoidownloadflashplayer_1.shtml" title="BBC Webwise article about downloading">Flash</a> installed.   emp.write();
</script>

<p><br />
<strong>What's an Interactive Operations Engineer?</strong></p>

<p>That's <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/digital/tv/tv_interactive.shtml">Red Button</a>, <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/iplayer/">iPlayer</a> and <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/">website,</a> so for example when you check the football scores on a Saturday - I make sure that it's all working.</p>

<p><strong>How did you get into making films?</strong></p>

<p>I got married and lived in America for a while. My wife at the time was a wedding photographer and I helped her out.</p>

<p>One day she was like 'you're quite good at this; you have the eye for getting an angle, a frame or a shot.'</p>

<p>From photos it went into video work because in America I also had a job for a newspaper and I was helping out their website. One day, they had some CCTV of a convenience store being robbed and before I knew it that led to me editing videos and making videos.<br />
 <br />
I came back in 2009 because I got divorced and I got my old job back at the BBC but the minute I returned, I thought 'I don't want to that this, I have an aptitude for being creative and I want to do stuff.'<br />
 <br />
<strong>Why transport videos?</strong></p>

<p>I did once have the <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3700658.stm">world record for travelling around the entire London Underground</a> in the fastest time possible. The minute I say that everyone will label me a trainspotter!</p>

<p>I have been trying to regain that world title. It's hard because it is worse than ever out there. </p>

<p>I have not had a car since I came back to London; petrol is high, there's insurance and it is just hassle you don't need.</p>

<p>I live in Ealing and I believe in public transport. I can get into work in 20 minutes.</p>

<p>You know what I hate the most? People go: "The Tube's are so smelly and dirty and blah blah blah."</p>

<p>You know what? They're not. If you go around the world and see other metro systems, then ours is pretty good.</p>

<p>Yes, it has its problems but it's amazing, it's got history, architectural merit and an underlying beauty that people don't see because they are sticking their nose in the Metro.</p>

<p><strong>This film is about the Boris Bikes...</strong></p>

<p>I <a href="http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/14808.aspx">signed up</a> and it's a brilliant way of seeing London. People are used to getting their regular train or bus. On a bike you'll suddenly find yourself on a little side street that they never knew existed and you might find an old church or a little garden.</p>

<p>We rode around all day, to see how many we could ride in a day and we went to about 130 docking points. We just rode around London in a big circle just to explore London by bike. It was brilliant.</p>

<p><strong>Who is the presenter?</strong></p>

<p>That's my lovely girlfriend, Victoria. </p>

<p>It started because she admitted to me one day that she had never been to <a href="http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/">Ikea.</a></p>

<p>I was like 'we're going to Ikea now.' I took my video camera to do a silly - 'let's record your experience at Ikea' and without me prompting she just started talking to the camera and going 'here we are at Ikea' and as she did it, I'm thinking this is really good; we can do some actual proper videos about stuff.</p>

<p><strong>Any more transport videos in the pipeline?</strong></p>

<p>Yes, but if I tell you, then you'll nick them!</p>

<p>There's a scheme called <a href="http://www.tfl.gov.uk/microsites/legible-london/">Legible London</a>, which helps people to walk around London.</p>

<p>I'd also like to find a friendly taxi driver and do a day in the life of a taxi-driver. I know it's been done before but it is always fun. </p>

<p>A lot of people say to me that they've never been on a Croydon tram.</p>

<p>I've got a lot of north London friends and they never venture south of the river. They're like, 'Do trams really exist in Croydon?'</p>]]></description>

	<title>Getting you through the Tube strike (the sequel)</title>
	<description><![CDATA[<p>If it's another Tube strike, then it must also mean the return of our ace transport duo, Steve Phillips and Tom Edwards.</p>

<p>First, they've shot another exclusive, no expense-spared, on location video for Mind the Gap.</p>

<p>While trying to look cool balancing on the hire bikes, Tom and Steve discuss, among other things, if there's an end in sight to the industrial dispute and <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/2010/09/tube_strike_map_-_the_only_way.html">how you can get involved</a> to help minimise any travel disruption for your fellow Londoners.</p>

<div id="edwards_01_10_10" class="player" style="margin-left:40px"> <p>In order to see this content you need to have both <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/webwise/askbruce/articles/browse/java_1.shtml" title="BBC Webwise article about enabling javascript">Javascript</a> enabled and <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/webwise/askbruce/articles/download/howdoidownloadflashplayer_1.shtml" title="BBC Webwise article about downloading">Flash</a> installed. 	<li>Online: <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/london/hi/">BBC London</a></li>
</ul>

<p>And, if you can't quite bring yourself to watch their handsome faces and listen to their dulcet tones, then here is more information in plain old words.</p>

<p><strong>Just to recap, why are they striking?</strong></p>

<div class="imgCaptionLeft" style="float: left; ">
<img alt="" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="margin: 0 20px 5px 0;" /><p style="width:58px;font-size: 11px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"> </p></div>

<p>The <a href="http://www.rmt.org.uk/">RMT</a> and <a href="http://www.tssa.org.uk/">TSSA</a> unions are set to walk out over 800 job losses. <a href="http://www.tfl.gov.uk/modalpages/2625.aspx">London Underground</a> are making the cuts to ticket office staff to save £16million a year.</p>

<p>There will also be a reduction in ticket office opening hours by 7500 hours in total across the network and six stations are going to lose ticket windows.</p>

<p>LU says there will be no compulsory redundancies and staff will be redeployed. It says sales from ticket offices are down 28 per cent over the last four years due mainly to the success of the <a href="https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk/oyster/entry.do">Oyster Card</a>.</p>

<p>The Unions say fewer staff and ticket office opening hours mean they won't be able to help as many people in particular the disabled and the vulnerable. And this is a "mugger's charter."</p>

<p><strong>How effective was last strike? and how bad will it be this time around</strong></p>

<div class="imgCaptionLeft" style="float: left; ">
<img alt="" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/steve55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="margin: 0 20px 5px 0;" /><p style="width:58px;font-size: 11px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"> </p></div>

<p>I would say pretty effective - even on the Northern line, which was posted by TfL as running a 'good service', there were gaps of 10 to 15 minutes between trains with many stations closed. </p>

<p>There's every chance the second strike will be as <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/news/uk-england-london-11209522">bad as last month, with severe disruption</a> to most Tube lines.</p>

<p>Transport for London, however, are saying there will be a better service than last month when they ran 40% of their trains.</p>

<p><strong>Why did the talks break down?</strong></p>

<div class="imgCaptionLeft" style="float: left; ">
<img alt="" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="margin: 0 20px 5px 0;" /><p style="width:58px;font-size: 11px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"> </p></div>

<p>We have had talks at the conciliation service <a href="http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1461">ACAS</a> but they <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/news/uk-england-london-11405016">don't seem to have got past first base</a>.</p>

<p>There were whispers of some sort of deal but in reality the Unions put a pre-condition on the talks.</p>

<p>The condition was London Underground had to withdraw the threat of job losses and then talks could continue. LU refused to do that.</p>

<p>Talks on day one didn't last long an hour or so before they collapsed. The second attempt lasted 6 hours so we thought there had been some progress. But actually it still hadn't got over this first hurdle. The same happened on the 3rd day.</p>

<p>Also although the unions the RMT and the TSSA claim there is not a cigarette paper between them in terms of this strike, it is a negotiation with three parties and that's bound to make it trickier.</p>

<p>TSSA have not been on strike on the Tube since 1926 so they are not militant and haven't always seen eye to eye with the RMT.</p>

<p><strong>Is TfL doing anything different this time? Lessons learnt?</strong></p>

<div class="imgCaptionLeft" style="float: left; ">
<img alt="" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/steve55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="margin: 0 20px 5px 0;" /><p style="width:58px;font-size: 11px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"> </p></div>

Not much change to the last strike. <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/news/uk-england-london-11450328">TfL are laying on over 100 extra buses,</a> capacity for 10,000 more river boat trips, marshalled taxi ranks and roadworks will also be suspended.

<p><strong>Is this strike now political?</strong></p>

<div class="imgCaptionLeft" style="float: left; ">
<img alt="" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="margin: 0 20px 5px 0;" /><p style="width:58px;font-size: 11px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"> </p></div>

<p>Well, some are certainly trying to make it political.</p>

<p>The Mayor Boris Johnson has said he believes the Unions are trying to make it political and use these cuts to attack the ConDem government.</p>

<p>You have to remember though these cuts are from the Mayor's £5bn efficiency savings from two years ago and not part of central Government cuts.</p>

<p>The Unions think this could be the tip of the iceberg when further cuts are announced to transport budgets later in October. That's why they are digging in.</p>

<p>Also the former Mayor Ken Livingstone is accusing Boris Johnson of not dealing with the situation and being more interested in grand standing at the <a href="http://www.conservatives.com/">Conservative Party Conference</a>.</p>

<p>The Mayor says he won't meet the Unions while they are in the middle of a dispute.</p>

<p>Although it has to be said he didn't meet the Unions or had any contact with them before the dispute either.</p>

<p>Ken Livingstone also says Boris Johnson "ratted" on his pledge to stop ticket office closures during his Mayoral campaign.</p>

<p>However don't forget the former Mayor Ken Livingstone also had plans to close 40 ticket offices in 2007 and redeploy the staff onto platforms.</p>

<p>The current Mayor has shifted his position now to allow cuts in ticket office hours - he says due to the success of Oyster - but politically the boot is now on the other foot.</p>

<p>And the Unions now want the Mayor not to attend the Conservative Party Conference and to sort it out. That seems extremely unlikely.</p>

<p>The Unions would say this is simply a dispute about job losses and safety and they claim political angle is being overplayed.</p>

<p><strong>How long is it likely to go on?</strong></p>

<div class="imgCaptionLeft" style="float: left; ">
<img alt="" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="margin: 0 20px 5px 0;" /><p style="width:58px;font-size: 11px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"> </p></div>

<p>Well, we are in a loop when it comes to talks and at the moment there doesn't seem to be much movement.</p>

<p>The next strikes will be on November 2 and November 28. There's certainly the chance that the strikes could continue after that unless there's a compromise.</p>

<p><strong>Where can we find out more on Monday?</strong></p>

<div class="imgCaptionLeft" style="float: left; ">
<img alt="" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/steve55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="margin: 0 20px 5px 0;" /><p style="width:58px;font-size: 11px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"> </p></div>

<p><strong>Has this the potential to be the worst industrial dispute on London transport since 1979?</strong></p>

<div class="imgCaptionLeft" style="float: left; ">
<img alt="" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="margin: 0 20px 5px 0;" /><p style="width:58px;font-size: 11px; color: rgb(102, 102, 102);"> </p></div>

<p>I think we are a long way from 1979.</p>

<p>In fact, we are a long way from the pay dispute in 2005/ 06 where the disruption was worse.</p>

<p>And experienced commentators say it's nowhere near the longest transport strike which was the signal workers dispute in the mid-1990s which lasted about three months with regular weekly 24, 48 and 36 hour stoppages.</p>

<p>That national strike crippled rail services into and out of London. So I think there's a way to go before we get to that.</p>]]></description>

	<title>Mind the Gap: Getting you through the Tube strike</title>
	<description><![CDATA[<p>See out the summer in style by indulging yourself in every Londoner's (least) favourite sport.</p>

<p>That's right, prepare and start training for the capital's very own mass participation endurance event: Getting to work (and getting home) when there's a <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/news/uk-england-london-11083153">Tube strike</a>.</p>

<p>Here at Mind the Gap, we've got two of our very best men to help you get up to speed (although not as speedy as a Tube train if they were actually running, obviously.)</p>

<p><img alt="Tom Edwards and Steve Phillips" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tomandsteve.jpg" width="226" height="170" class="mt-image-right" style="float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;" /></p>

<p>They are the Jose Mourinho and Fabio Capello of all things transport and travel in London. Ladies and gentlemen... Tom Edwards and Steve Phillips.</p>

<p>That's them in the photo on the right. Tom is wearing the fetching pink shirt. Why are they both grinning when there is a strike on?</p>

<p>This is also them in this exclusive video below.</p>

<p>Shot especially for you, the wonderful Mind the Gap readers, on location in Oxford Circus, Steve and Tom discuss the likely impact of the strike and offer top advice to keep you moving.</p>

<div id="edwards_25_08_10" class="player" style="margin-left:40px"> <p>In order to see this content you need to have both <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/webwise/askbruce/articles/browse/java_1.shtml" title="BBC Webwise article about enabling javascript">Javascript</a> enabled and <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/webwise/askbruce/articles/download/howdoidownloadflashplayer_1.shtml" title="BBC Webwise article about downloading">Flash</a> installed. <p><br />
Also, in a less hi-tech manner, they've also set out a useful Q&A-style guide.</p>

<p>Stay with us throughout the forthcoming weeks for the latest transport news and travel information.</p>

<p>We are Mind the Gap, and we are here so that there are no gaps in your journey!</p>

<p>And if anyone wants to share their coping strategies or tell us about their nightmare scenarios, leave a comment below/<a href="http://twitter.com/BBCTravelAlert">tweet us</a>/<a href="mailto:yourlondon@bbc.co.uk">email</a>/<a href="http://www.facebook.com/BBCLondon">Facebook</a>/<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8248056.stm">carrier pigeon</a>.</p>

<p><strong>Why are they striking?</strong></p>

<p><img alt="Tom Edwards 55px" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /></p>

<p>The Unions say fewer staff and ticket office opening hours mean they won't be able to help as many people in particular the disabled and the vulnerable. And this is a "mugger's charter."</p>

<p><strong>Will all Tube services be affected?</strong></p>

<p>In short, most. All Tube lines will suffer some disruption from delays to part or even full suspensions. Best to check what's running/not running before you leave the door.</p>

<p>Our travel team will be in overdrive giving extra updates on the traditional channels - BBC London TV bulletins, extra radio bulletins on BBC London 94.9, and the <a href="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/london/travel/public_transport/">travel section</a> of this website.</p>

<p>You can also join our commuter community on <a href="http://twitter.com/bbctravelalert">Twitter</a>, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/BBCLondon">Facebook</a> and there will be more detailed updates on our <a href="http://audioboo.fm/BBCLondon949">Audioboo</a> channel.</p>

<p><strong>Will TfL be providing any extra services on the strike days?</strong></p>

<p><img alt="Steve Phillips 55px" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/steve55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /></p>

<p>As yet, we're awaiting confirmation of TfL's contingency plan, but expect it to be similar to last year.</p>

<p>That means extra buses, river services, guided cycle routes, and of course we've now got the hire bikes (though there will be a big demand for those).</p>

<p><br />
<strong>Is there any chance the strikes could still be called off?</strong></p>

<p><img alt="Tom Edwards 55px" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /></p>

<p>Yes, there is a chance that both sides could end up at <a href="http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1461">ACAS</a> the conciliation service to thrash out a deal.</p>

<p>What could be compromised on? The number of job losses perhaps and therefore the number of hours some ticket offices are losing.</p>

<p>There is also the other route of court action which has become more popular with employers for example <a href="http://www.networkrail.co.uk/">Network Rail</a> and <a href="http://www.britishairways.com/travel/globalgateway.jsp/global/public/en_">British Airways</a> both obtained court rulings to stop strikes.</p>

<p>But this dispute started back in March and the RMT Union have been updating their records since then. So you'd think the chances for any irregularities in the administration to emerge in court would now be low.</p>

<p><strong>When was the last time there was a Tube strike and how bad was it?</strong></p>

<p><img alt="Steve Phillips 55px" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/steve55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /></p>

<p>June, 2009. And it was bad, if you wanted to struggle into work.</p>

<p>A lot of London's faithful commuters worked from home or took time off. The roads were a lot heavier, but the few Tube services that were running were surprisingly quiet!</p>

<p><strong>Are there enough hire bikes to take up the slack?</strong></p>

<p><img alt="Tom Edwards 55px" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /></p>

<p>No.</p>

<p>Up to four million commuters a day use the tube - more than the entire rail network and there are around <a href="http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/14808.aspx">4,000 hire bikes</a> all in Zone One.</p>

<p>So, I think while the bikes will probably be busier than ever before, they clearly can't match that kind of capacity. It's not really what they're designed for - they are aimed at short journeys under 30 minutes within Zone One.</p>

<p>But there will be guided cycle rides to help novice cyclists into town from all over London, I'd have thought.</p>

<p><br />
<strong>As well as commuters who else loses out from a strike?</strong></p>

<p><img alt="Tom Edwards 55px" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /></p>

<p>The business group <a href="http://www.london-first.co.uk/">London First</a> estimates it costs the capital's economy about £50m a day.</p>

<p>The employees who go on strike don't get paid. LU get no fare box for that day. Industrial relations between employers and employees can sometimes get extremely ugly. Of course, the biggest losers are commuters.</p>

<p><strong>Any winners from the strike?</strong></p>

<p><img alt="Steve Phillips 55px" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/steve55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /></p>

<p>Yes - black cab drivers, mini-cab firms, pedi-cab cyclists, <a href="http://www.thamesclippers.com/">Thames Clipper boat services</a>, Boris Johnson's bike hire scheme, buses (if you can get on one) and possibly Tom's overtime!</p>

<p>But, no, generally, a Tube strike is just a lot of hassle for everyone.</p>

<p><strong>What happens after the strikes? More strikes? Back to the negotiating table?</strong></p>

<p><img alt="Tom Edwards 55px" src="https://nontonwae.pages.dev/blogs/mindthegap/tom55.jpg" width="58" height="55" class="mt-image-left" style="float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;" /></p>

<p>After the last few strikes we've had settlements quite quickly with both sides saying the other backed down first and they didn't change their offer. So that's a possibility.</p>

<p>But predicting things in industrial negotiations is a tricky business as you don't know exactly what's going on round the table.</p>

<p>The issue here also is this strike will have national significance.</p>

<p>Many people will be looking at these lay offs and say they show which way other cuts in the public sector will go and how they will play out.</p>

<p>So the stakes become higher and it can then become more about a clash of ideologies, than about head count. And in the current climate, the Unions will not want to lose face.</p>]]></description>
