The Huaca and the City

Standing, on the top of the pyramide, I had a view of a growing city: the vanguardist desing of buildings, the shining light of a luxury resturant, People driving modern cars. Everything has been touch by the modernity except one place which was trapped in the past. This is the birthplace of our civilization, the origins of Lima culture. Their first inhabitants built this place exactly 700 AD. This place is known as "Huaca Pucllana". A "sacred place" in a forest of cement.

Acording to the legend, the first Inca couple was born from a “Huaca”. Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo were the couple chosen by the God called “Viracocha” (The Maker). They had the order to protect the Inca civilization. For this reason the “Huaca” it’s considered sacred and It has been used to make rituals and venerations. It could be represented by a huge rock or natural locations.

Entrance to the "Huaca Pucllana"

A “Huaca” trapped in the city

“Huaca Pucllana” o “Juliana” is the Quechua name used for this great building by people from Lima culture in the fifth century. This is located in the heart of the most exclusive district in Lima, Miraflores. Surrounded by houses, buildings, gardens, parks, there is the most impressive adobe and clay pyramid.

Huaca Pucllana (plaza)

It served as an important ceremonial and administrative center for the advancement of the Lima Culture. They lived in the area encompassing the Chancay , Chillon and Lurin Valleys. (In the south of Lima)

Huaca Pucllana (contrast with the City)

Their daily lives consisted of farming, fishing and hunting, besides they were excellents making textiles, pottery and implements for farming. The pottery was one of the most important activities of Lima culture. Most of the time vessels were used for cooking.

Peopple working

Cooking

The symbols and drawing on the pottery expressed a connotation religious like “two- headed shark” and “waves”. This represents the power of the sea.

The Two-head shark in the pottery

"Pucllana" is divided in two areas which are separated by a great wall of adobe bricks. The first section is an administrative area. This contains a series of plazas and enclosures that was used for public meetings to discuss about the production of food.

It works as an Old cook

The other section was a ceremonial place with its pyramid, where religious rites and ceremonies were held. There were evidence of deep pits where offerings of fish and other marine life took place in order to attain the favor of the gods.

The fall of Lima

Around 700 A.D The Lima culture suffered an internal crisis, as a result appeared new religions and a new Inca group from Southern Andes. The Wari Empire arrived from province Ayacucho and the “Huaca Pucllana” was used as a cemetery for the Wari Elite. Since then The “Huaca” is considered a place for for offerings a worshiped.

Nowadays it's a tourist place and it's awesome because of their architecture. It’s a building make entirely by adobe and bricks. Inside of this it’s possible to see some animals from Peru and South America like “the peruvian dog” a breed of dog which lived before Incas, it’s curious because It’s a hairless dog. They are friendly and small. There are too, llamas and alpacas they are camelid from Andean cultures since pre-hispanic times.

Llama (camelid from South America)

The trip around the “Huaca” last 45 minutes aproximately and the last ten minutes the visitants could go to the top to the pyramid.

Going to the top

The Huaca and the city

Standing on the top the pyramid, the peaceful of the place transport me to the those times where society seemed more equal, more fraternal, more human, suddenly the barking of a dog made me wake up. It was a dream.

Living between Angels and Demons

Walking along the "Jiron de la Union" (the Jiron of the Union), a narrow street located in the Historic Centre of Lima, I saw a particular "casona" ( old house built during the sixteen century). My curiosity was stronger than me so I entered the house. It was impossible not to see him, his horns moving around his head, his bigs eyes looking at me, his big mouth draws an evil smile, He gave me the welcome, It' was too late to escape. He didn't tell me his name but, by that time, it was obvious. He was "the devil".

Edwin Loza lives in Puno, one of the coldest provinces in the south of Lima, exactly in the borderline between Peru and Bolivia. Hilario Mendivil lived in Cusco, land of Incas. Their names are not only known in Peru, but also in the many countries in the world. But, What do they have in common? Edwin makes “demons” and Hilario, “angels”.

Casa O'Higgins (Old house in Lima centre)

Edwin Loza: maker of devils

His wide eyes shinny look at me,. His face seem to be bathed in a rainbow. The colorful of his head is stronger than the fire. It’s hideous and beautiful at the same time. This a piece of art was made by Edwin Loza Huachari, a famous “mascarero” (craftsman of masks).

Caporal (Main Devil) It used in dances known as "diabladas"

Edwin Loza Huarachi is “puneño” (who was born in Puno). He is a self taught artist. All he knows he has learned from watching how others work artisans, collecting contributions from friends and accepting customer requirements.

The masks of Edwin Loza are used in one the most important festivity in Peru, “Fiesta de la virgen de la candelaria”. These masks have been carefully prepared based on recyclable materials such as plaster, old cloth, paper, sawdust, among others.

Costume (People wear like this to dance "diablada"

Wearing masks is not only an costume. The use of masks was born along time ago, during the Spanish invasion. (nineteen century). When the Andean communities were conquered by the Spanish, the indians wearing masks to evaded the sad reality, so they satirize the Spanish and foreing with horribles masks of devil and demons.

Mask of "Diableza"

Mask of Spanish (satirization)

Mask of old diableza

Main Devil

Edwin Loza has worked for more than 40 years, for this reason he recently was named “Amauta de artesanía” (master of crafts). His masks are so famous. They have been exported to other countries like Mexico, France, Spain and England. Even in the museums of Mexico and Germany, there are masks made by Loza.

Dance of demons

According to the legend a group of miners were trapped inside of a mine in Puno. They were slowly dying without hope of salvation. The devil had tried to take the soul, but one of them had a picture of “the Virgen de la Candelaria” in his pocket. They invoked to the virgin . When they finished praying above them opened a gap, penetrating the air and light. Since then worshiped the Virgin dancing in costumes similar to those worn by the Lord of the Underworld.

For this reason every year on february is celebrated in Puno province “La fiesta de la virgen de la candelaria” (Candelaria Virgin Feast). It’s one of the most importants traditional festivals in Peru. Curiously the main character of this activity is not the virgin...is the devil.

In this festivity is represented the good and evil. People who represent the evil they wear as demons and wear masks of devils and people who represent the good wear as an angels.

Hilario Mendivil: The art of long neck

His hands was touched by an angel. Since Hilario was a child he liked making clay figures although his family wasn't disagree, because they thought it was a waste of time so HIlario used to spend his time playing with “llamas” (a South American camelid with long neck). Years later that “llama” was his inspirations to do one of his best works of art: “The long-necked angeles”.

Christian birth (Notice the neck)

Hilario Mendivil is considered one of the most important “craftsman” in Perú and in the world. His work is mainly religious, Virgin, angels, Birth of Jesus. But he has a particular point of view. All his saints has a long neck.

Angel long neck

He was born in Cusco, in a town called “San Blas”, it’s a place very religious and catholic. Hilario grew up in a poor and traditional family for this reason his family didn’t want to have an “craftsman”, because it was a work underpaid, but finally his faith and passion for arts was stronger and todays his name is symbol of pride in Peru.

Angel long neck

His long neck angels has travelled around the world: France, Japan, Germany even the “Vatican city” where in 2002 the Hilario’s angels were displayed.

Christian birth

Hilario died in 1977, but his family has continued his work. His house is a museum know as “Museo Hilario Mendivil” where all his pieces are exposed to the public in general.

Although he has died 33 years ago his long neck angels still live in his house, in San Blas, in Cusco. They have converted that place in a branch of the sky.

Nowadays the arts of these craftmen are displayed in The O’higgins house, (Old Casona in Jiron de la Union). The exhibition is called "Treasures of art and traditions of Peru". Hilario Mendivil and Edwin Loza joined Angels and Devils in one place.

A paradise at the end of the cliff

An old windmill give us the welcome. Many years ago this district was known as "Ciudad de los Molinos" (city of windmills), nowadays there is only one, which like a giant of Don Qixote, cares the entrance of this town. It was born at the end of a cliff and its spectacular landscape was the inspirations of writers, poets, singers and artists that left part of his live in this magic place called Barranco.

A district frozen in time

Barranco is located in southern Lima, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and is next to Miraflores. It's the most traditional district in Lima, its atmosphere is more peaceful and quiet than any other, for this reason people says it's the escape of the modernity.

Barranco

The district of Barranco was officially established on the 26th of October 1874 and it's the second smallest district of Lima. Originally it was inhabited by fishermen, although many years later it became an exclusive bay of Lima.

In 1881 Barranco was invaded by Chilean troops during the Pacific War. This district was badly damaged. But some years later (at the beginning of the 20th century) like a Fenix Bird It recovered from the war and It became as shelter of writers, poets, singers and artists.

The best moment of Barranco was In the 19th-century, it was a very fashionable beach resort for the aristocracy, and many wealthy limeños used to spend the summer here. They built residences, houses and ranches with European style. Nowadays, Barranco's beaches are popular to practice surfing and others aquatic sports.

Walking through the past

A perfect point to start a tour through Barranco is the Parque Municipal. There is the 'Biblioteca Municipal de Barranco' (Municipal Library of Barranco), built at the end of the 19th century.
"The person, who makes a wish and then crosses the bridge for the first time without taking a breath, will have his wish fulfilled". It says the tradition.

The legend tell us that a rich man's daughter lived in one of these grand houses, She fell in love with a lowly street sweeper. Her father forbade the union, and she lived out her days as a spinster, waiting at her window for a glimpse of her beloved. Those who walked across the bridge could hear her plaintive sighs. Since that moment the bridge was called "The bridge of sighs" (Puente de los suspiros).

"The bridge of sighs" - at night

Initially "the bridge of sighs" had 44 metres long and 3 metres wide, but The Pacific War and earthquakes damaged the bridge so It had to be repaired several times and was cut down in the middle of the 20th century to its actual length of 31 m.

The bridge inspired a famous song entitled "Bridge of Sighs". It was made by the composer and singer Chabuca Granda. She was a "barranquina" (from Barranco district) and one of the most representatives peruvian women in the world. She wrote many songs called "valses criollos".
In the name of Love

In Miraflores a couple of giants have the longest kiss of their lives. They are loving in front of the sea, below the gray sky, above of the stares of curious people. Their bodies are not perfect, the silhouette of their figures are irregular, but they don't care about it, because they are genuine. The day could be sunny, cloudy or rainy but they will always be there. Nothing matters because they will love for all eternity.

The love in times of war

During the19th century Miraflores was in the middle of a war, known as The Pacific War. (Between Chile and Peru). Peruvian soldiers and civilians died defending his district, for this reason Miraflores it’s also know as “heroic district”.

Boat anchor, symbol of the Pacific War

Nowadays Miraflores is considered one of the most exclusive districts in Lima. There are luxurios hotels, pubs, discos, restaurant and places of entertainment. Although this disctrict is not only attractive for its buildings but also for its beautiful parks and gardens. One of them is: "El parque del Amor" (Love Park).

Miraflores distric

The sunset could be the inspiration of many people that find in that a place a perfect shelter to think, cry or to love. Between the see and the city. Love Park is located on the cliffs of Miraflores overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Parque del Amor (Love Park)

The peruvian poet Antonio Cilloniz used to say that "In the cities, they do not build monuments to lovers", for these reason "Love Park" was opened on February 14, 1993, St Valentine's Day. It’s a place dedicated to all lovers and offers a stunning view over the bay of Lima.

“The kiss” of the giants

Victor Delfín is a peruvian sculptur and is the father of the the giants in love. He made this monument of love and he baptized as “El Beso” (The kiss) the same day of the inauguration of Love Park.

The Kiss

“El Beso” (The kiss) is the most impressive sculpture of Love Park and it describes two lovers in a passionate kiss. It’s normal during the day and night see couples here, kissing or snuggled close together. The monument has a dimension of 12 meters long and 3 meters high.

Many just married couples, with a bouquet in hand, go to the park to be sealed with a kiss the consecration of their wedding. It’s common to see couples in love promise eternity love, fidelity and draw a heart with tiny stones in the ground as symbol of his love while the sunset is painted in the skyline.

Every year on "Valentines Day" a massive people participate in a particulary contest. The competition takes place between couples attendees who can keep "the longest kiss”.

Voices in the park

“My memories are stronger than your oblivion”. It belongs to Carlos A. Salaverry, peruvian poet, and his quotes tranport me to the past when, every weekend, I used to go to the "Love Park" to read some poems. I used to read in silence, like praying, until the night came on me. Until "she" came into my mind.

City of Deads

My friend and I took the taxi quickly, we were getting late. It’s almost 4pm, the sun just has gone and the cloud was turning on gray black. Sadith is my old friend, She was a little scared unlike me I was excited. We were going to meet to “El niño Ricardito” (Child Richard). He is seven years old and lives at “Presbitero Maestro cemetery”. He is dead.

The first cemetery of the city.

Presbitero Matías Maestro” was the first cemetery of Lima and one of the oldest cemeteries in America. It’s located in “Barrios altos” in the outside of downtown Lima. Before to built this cemetery, people were buried in the underground and catacombs of Churchs and Cathedrals, for this reason in 1808 a spanish priest Elías Presbitero Maestro designed this magnific monument to the deads.

Presbitero Maestro cemetery

It’s considered historical monument in Peru and America because it has extraordinary architecture and fantastic sculptures.

In this cemetery were buried the most important personalities of the century XIX and the aristocracy (rich people) from Lima. It’s a real city with streets and avenues. It has 150 000 m2, more than 685 graves, 393 mausoleum and 72 historical monuments.

The cemetery has graves of many historical Personalities of Peru in addition to the mausoleum erected in honor of the heroes of the Pacific War- (War between Peru and Chile). The most important people from the History of Lima were buried there. Writers as Ricardo Palma or José Santos Chocano, presidents as Augusto B. Leguia, intelectuals as Jose Carlos Mariategui or Raúl Porras and heroes as Miguel Grau “The lord of the seas” . People that wrote the History of Peru.

Ramon Castilla Mausoleum - President of Peru in the century XIX

Finding to Ricardito

Behind the shadows of the scultures and walls of the this cemetery are hidden stories, legends and myths. One of them is the story about “Ricardito” or The little Richard.

Ricardo Espiell Barrionuevo known as “Ricardito” was born in Lima in 1886. “The little Richard” died when he was 7 years old. Nobody knows exactly the causes of his death. He was buried at “Presbitero Maestro cemetery”.

"Niño Ricardito"

The legend tell us that his relatives made a statue in his name after his death. A big earthquake destroyed part of the cemetery and the statue dissappeared. Nobody could find the statue. Strangely after some months the statue appeared in Spain and it was intact. The president of that moment ordered to bring back it again. How the statue appeared in Spain? A mystery.

People say the statue is miracolous. Thanks to “Ricardito” that people could get a job or solve problem, for this reason they always give him any kind of gift: flowers, sweets and toys.

At the end of our visit, my friend wasnt’ afraid anymore and I thought “when the faith, the scary and the superstition are together begin a new myth”. If it doesn’t exist, we invent it”

October 7, 2010.

"At first I thought it was a joke", said the writer, Mario Vargas Llosa, when he heard the Swedish Academy's announcement: "you have won the Literature nobel prize 2010".

It’s, definitely, the news of the year. “The peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa is awarded today the Nobel Prize in Literature 'for his cartography of the structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt and defeat.'

Mario Vargas Llosa

The news flashed round the world. Today, when I woke up. I turned on the television and Mario Vargas Llosa was being interviewed on the radio. “It was surprising, I didn’t expect to receive any prize”, said.

In Peru, everyone comment this great news, on internet, all social networks are published news about Mario Vargas Llosa; radio, television are dealing to get an interview. It’s really impressive all the media coverage.

Mario Vargas Llosa the journalist...

He was born in Arequipa (a province in sourthern Lima). Then he lived In Lima and Studied at military Leoncio Prado School. In his book “La ciudad y los perros” (The City and the dogs), 1962. He tell us about his experiencie as studient and how he could survived in that school.

In Lima he studied Laws at San Marcos University, in those times he had a revolutionary ideology, he was sympathizer of Cuban revolution, although after some years he changed his ideology to liberal right.

Not many people know, that Mario Vargas Llosa before to be a famous writer, he was a journalist. At the age of 23 he worked in “La Cronica” newspaper. This experience was determinated for him, because it was inspiration to write “Conversación en la Catedral” (Conversation in the Cathedral), 1969. This is one of the best books, since my point of view the best. This book analize what happen behind political situation, sordid stories between yellow journalism, and cabarets and miserable people. It was monumental.

From the books to the films...

Did you know that Keanu Reeves was a character in a film based in a novel of Mario Vargas Llosa? Yes It did. The film is “tune tomorrow”,(1990) and is based in the book “La tía Julia y el escribidor” (Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter), 1977. It was a polemic book. This is a partly autobiographical story of the relationship between a young Mario and his aunt, a beautiful, sexy and sophisticated woman older than him.

The popular “Neo” stars as “Varguitas”. (Mario Vargas Llosa was know as Varguitas). Unfortunately this film not was good for the critics, but it’s a good choose to see today!

“Pantaleon y las visitadoras”. (Captain Pantoja and the Special Service) was another film based in a book of the same name, this relate the life of a military Captain Pantoja who has to look after of prostitutes and accommodate the desires of the men of the Peruvian armed forces in the jungle. It was two versions, one first in 1975 and the second in 1999 and It was directed by the peruvian Francisco Lombardi in 1999. It had pretty succesful.

“La fiesta del chivo” 1996, (The Feast of the Goat) This book is based on the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, takes place in the Dominican Republic. It was made into film in 2006 and it was directed by Luis Llosa, novelist’s cousin.

The writer who wanted to be president...

In 1990 Mario Vargas Llosa was candidate for peruvian president. He could have been president, but the History did not wanted. He represented the center right, the other candidate was Alberto Fujimori (today arrested by corruption). Finally, At the end of this Alberto Fujimori won the elections.

Finally today justice was served and Mario Vargas Llosa is right now on the Olympus of world writers. Peruvian people will never forget this global event.

In a recentrly interview. He said: “I am proud to be Peruvian as Machu Picchu”.

Mario Vargas llosa: novelist, essayist, politician, journalist, master and peruvian.

Congratulations!

The Lord of Miracles

I still can remember the day when I was in the Earthquake. It was three years ago. I was walking along the boardwalk when I heard "that sound", it's not a sound like another. The windows of the houses started to shake. The ground started to move like a big wave. While I was hearing the first shouts, I saw a man kneeling praying "please Lord of the miracles save us"!

So begins the story of the lord of the miracles....

It was a long time ago, around 17th century.

The miracle started at the end of an Earthquake. It was the early morning of anyday in 1655, during the Vicerayolty. The city of Lima was still sleeping when suddenly a terrible sound shook the earth. The quiet was broken. The city was seized by the panic. Lima had woken up.

People were running in terror, some of them were crying, another shouting and a few of them were praying. When the earthquake ended, the city was not the same anymore: there were cracks in the ground, shattered streets, broken houses. Everything was destroyed, everything was devastated except one thing: a curious image on the wall.

The mistery of the wall

In those times, Lima society was divided into three distinct classes: Spanish Republic (White People from Europe, from Spain mainly. They were the dominant group), Indian Republic ( Dominated group, they were descendants of the Incas and had a certain prestige but other were treated like servants), and the Slaves (they were black people from Africa mainly, they used to work on farms and orchards).

One group of the Slaves used to live in an orchard called “Pachacamilla”. The History tell us that five years before the earthquake, in 1650, a black slave (whose name is unknown) painted a mural. Everyone was amazed because the slave had painted a crucified “Black Christ”. Slaves worshiped the image and they named it like “Cristo de Pachacamilla”.

On this mural appears the crucified Black Jesus. Above the cross is the Holy Spirit and God the Father. Below and to the right of Jesus is his mother, the Virgin Mary with her heart pierced by a lance of sorrow and to her right at the foot of the cross is Mary Magdalene.

But that mural came to be known after the terrible earthquake in 1655. The catastrophe had destroyed most of the city leaving only that mural standing up. This fact increased the devotion of slaves. “Miracle of God” said some people. “Luck” said some skeptical. Since that moment slaves named the Black Christ “Señor de Los MIlagros“ (Lord of the miracles) or “Señor de los temblores“ (Lord of the earthquakes).

Since then, many stories have been told: terminally ill patients were cured, blind people could see again and other incredible miracles.

People use to celebrate and thank the miracles with gatherings where people could sing or play guitar; although for some religious people those kind of celebrations were offensive. That was the reason why the viceroy ordered a painter to remove the mural, but when he approached and tried to erase the image, his hand was completely paralyzed. He fainted. Another painter intended to clear again, but the result was the same. Nobody could touch the image. Neighboors commented: “It seems like God does not want the image to be erased”.

"Lor of the MIracles" is one of the biggest processions around the world.

Finally the Viceroy had to bless the mural.

Years later, in the same place of the mural It was built a Monastery, called Nazarenas Church, where the image was saved.

Celebration of Faith

Since that time every year, in October thousands of believers celebrate the Lord of Miracles in a religious procession through the streets of Lima. This festivity is the main catholic celebration in Peru and one of the biggest processions around the world. The main days are 18th and 19th in october.

The litter which bears the image weighs two tons and is carried on the shoulders of believers who set out on the traditional procession from the church of Las Nazarenas to many districts of Lima.

Procession of Lord of the miracles

Thousands of Faithful are dressed in purple and sing hymns and pray as they accompany the image. The original image was fixed in the 20th century by artists italians and this is saved in the Nazarenas Church.

Nazarena Church

....

The last eartquake in Peru was three years ago. The epicenter was in the sourthern of Lima. It lasted 3 minutes and 30 seconds and it was considered like one of the most violents and destructive in recent years. There were 595 dead and more than 1,800 wounded. The town Ica, Chincha y Pisco were almost in ruins. After the eartquake a image of Christ which was in the “ "templo de Luren” (Luren Temple) was intact. A new miracle born again.

Have you heard about Peru?

First of all. Let me introduce me.

I'm 26 years old. I speak Spanish. I'm learning English. I'm a footballer (every Sunday with my friends). I'm a singer (only when a take a shower). I'm a good a boy (according to my grandma). I'm a writer (when a I feel sad). I'm a poet (when I fall in love). I'm a dancer (only in the discos). I'm a journalist (but I don´t have a boss). I'm a recently blogger (for this month). My name is Miguel and I'm from Peru. (the country where Machu Picchu is located).

When the History speaks

When I have to talk about my country, it's impossible not to mention Machu Picchu. It's more than an important tourist attraction. It's located 2,430 metres above sea level and is in southeastern Peru. It was built around 1450 and it's considered as a masterpiece of architecture and engineering. Neither The Spanish could find that "Lost City".

Machu Picchu

For many years archeologists called Machu Picchu as a "Lost city of the Incas" because nobody knew about its existence until 1911 when it was discovered by historian Hiram Birgham. It was declared Peruvian Historical Sanctuary by UNESCO in 1981 and is one of The New Seven Wonders of the world.

Welcome to Lima

I am, currently, in Lima. This city is the capital of Peru. Lima is an historical and tourist place too. Particulary Lima, is a place that you'll always find a place to go.

Lima Cathedral

Every corner of this place has something to say, something to show, something to hide, something to discover.

Lima was founded in 1535 by The Spanish Fransico Pizarro. It was the most important city during The Viceroyalty of Peru. It is on the coast of Peru, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Government Palace

I've always thought Peru has a bit of everything. It has Andes Mountain, Cost and Jungle. The main spoken language is Spanish, although a large number of Peruvians speak other native languages like Quechua or Aymaya.

Dances

We have a delicious gastronomy, very rich culture, traditional customs, dances, arts, impressive architecture, beautiful landscapes, romantic sunset, and the most important: friendly and very interesting people.

Paragliding - "Costa Verde" Beach of Lima

My challenge is not only improve my English, It's to show you my country and our culture through to the History. I hope when you have the opportunity to travel one place in the world you can choose Peru. You won't regret !

Today begins a long trip through the past.

Are you ready?
