A unique project that will unearth one of the bleakest chapters in the history of mankind will show how Birmingham played a crucial role in transatlantic enslavement. ‘3 Continents 1 History’ is a year long research project which sets to show the contemporary relevance of 1807 and the transatlantic slave trade to Birmingham’s diverse communities. This unique project will uncover the role the Birmingham and the Midlands, played in the enslavement of Africans. Dr Clive Harris, who is leading the projects research, feels that the region has a long way to go, in terms of it’s openness about its shameful past: "I think Birmingham, like the whole country, is in denial. I am asking for a truthful account of British history." With its findings the project hopes to expand the coverage of these issues within the national curriculum and establish an archive for educational and community purposes. 3 Continents 1 History will be launched officially at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery on March 25th 2007.
