Juno and The Paycock is set in Dublin in 1922 during the Irish Civil War. It follows the misfortunes of the Boyle family, who live in a two-room tenement apartment.

The main characters are Juno Boyle, Jack Boyle, Mary Boyle, Johnny Boyle and Joxer Daly.

Poverty, religion, nationalism and gender inequality are some of the themes covered in the play.

The play is a tragicomedy. The dialogue can be funny at times, but themes such as poverty and war make it very serious watching.
