Simultaneous equations are two linear equations that can be solved using bar models.
By remembering that the same letter will always have the same value we can work out the missing values.
To solve simultaneous equations we must work out the value of x and y that make the equations work.
How do you solve simultaneous equations using bar models?
How to solve simultaneous equations using bar models.
How much is each ticket?
Let's call the adult ticket y and the child ticket x.
Draw a bar to represent one y and two x's.
Another bar represents the total of £7.
Do the same for the second set of tickets.
One y and two x's are on both diagrams.
This is worth £7.
Delete this from both bars.
Three x's are £6.
So, one x must be £2.
Go back to the first diagram.
You now know x is £2.
If the bar totalled £7, then y must be £3.
The adult ticket, y, is £3 and the child ticket, x, is £2.
