A waxy surface protects the leaf from the environment, whilst still letting sunlight through.
Leaves make food for the plant, in the form of glucose, a type of sugar. To do this they need Carbon Dioxide from the air, water from the soil and light from the sun. This amazing process is called photosynthesis.

Animals need to eat food to get their energy, but plants can make their own in a process called photosynthesis. This process mainly takes place in the plant's leaves. The cells in the leaves use light from the Sun, along with carbon dioxide in the air and water to make food.
