On Sunday 15th October there’s a bus tour which explores JRR Tolkien’s connections with Birmingham and the inspiration for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. | | Sarehole Mill |
Tolkien spent 13 years of his childhood in the Sarehole area of Birmingham. The Tolkien Trail Bus Tour leaves Sarehole Mill at 11.30am and will be lead by Tolkien expert Bob Blackham. The guided tour will go to the author’s previous homes and areas and landmarks credited with inspiring elements within the trilogy. Stops include; Sarehole Mill and Moseley Bog, the childhood playgrounds of Tolkien, the exterior of 264 Wake Green Road and 4 Highfield Road, his former homes, and the extraordinary 30m Perott’s Folly Tower, which is said to have inspired the ‘Two Towers of Gondor’.
Councillor Ray Hassall, Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, said: “It is important that Sarehole Mill takes the lead in celebrating its links with one of the world’s most well known authors. | | Dressing up isn't compulsory! |
“Since its creation the tour has been very popular and I am delighted that the council is supporting this bus tour so even more people can enjoy the Tolkien Trail.” Sarehole is one of only two surviving watermills in Birmingham.
