Sarla's dream job

Volunteering for the RSPB lead to Sarla getting her 'dream job'. She tells us why volunteering has been so important to her and how she's met some amazing people.

My name’s Sarla Patel and I’m delighted to be the new RSPB Bird Friendly Schools Officer for Birmingham and The Black Country.

After twelve years of teaching in primary schools and a couple of years as an RSPB volunteer, it’s fantastic to be able to combine the skills I’ve gained through teaching with my passion for birds and wildlife.

When I became a volunteer, I didn’t anticipate that one day I’d be employed by the RSPB. Volunteering is like that - it allows you to keep sight of what you value, which is why I still volunteer when I can.

About two years ago, RSPB Sandwell Valley Nature Reserve launched its Holiday Wildlife Club and I wanted to get involved.

It gave me a unique opportunity to teach children about the natural world in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Helping to organise and run the activities is immensely rewarding. Nothing quite beats the sight of a wide-eyed child saying “Wow!”

People often ask me why I volunteer. The simple answer is I enjoy it. I have always been fascinated by the natural world and spent much of my early years chatting to house sparrows and creating mud pies. Ah, happy days. I enjoy having fun and firmly believe it is a positive way in which to inspire children.

Becoming an RSPB volunteer opened up an entire new world for me. It’s with sincerity that I can say I have met and come to know some truly remarkable people, who have made me feel valued and respected. Everyone counts!

By giving my time, I have gained a new confidence and satisfaction that I do indeed make a difference. Volunteering with the RSPB has enabled me to build on my knowledge of the natural world, make new friends and… land a job with the RSPB. Except it’s not a job – it’s a dream job.

I’ve been in my post for almost three months and I’m incredibly excited to be involved in the Bird Friendly Schools project. I’m able to use all my skills AND watch a new generation of youngsters grow and come to have the same kind of passion for the world they live in. I’m happy!

There'll be more information about the Bird Friendly Schools project in the coming weeks.
