Having a ball with Chelsea

A young Leukaemia-sufferer from Wokingham scored a great day out with her family when she met her footballing heroes at Chelsea FC. She even managed to score a few goals against Petr Cech!

Not many Chelsea FC fans can claim they've nutmegged José Mourinho, or indeed scored a goal against keeper Petr Cech.

The Casson-Green family from Wokingham can.

Seven-year-old Lily, along with her eight-year-old brother Stanley and nine-year-old sister Polly, met the manager and players from Chelsea FC on Monday 12 March at the launch of Kick for CLIC Sargent – the fun football event held by schools and clubs which raises money for children with cancer.

Lily was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2004 and had to stay at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for a number of months whilst she underwent chemotherapy.

During her treatment, Lily and her family were supported by CLIC Sargent, the children's cancer charity.

"Kick for CLIC Sargent allows children to do that and also raise money for a great cause at the same time."

Launching Kick for CLIC Sargent for the third year, the charity invited children affected by cancer, including Lily, her sister and brother, to Chelsea's training ground in Surrey for a skills class run by Chelsea's Football In The Community programme.

As well as getting to play where the Chelsea players train, the children were also lucky enough to meet Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, striker Salomon Kalou and manager José Mourinho when they joined in the skills class.

Supporting the launch Petr Cech said: "Getting outside and playing football in the summer is always good fun. Kick for CLIC Sargent allows children to do that and also raise money for a great cause at the same time."

Kick for CLIC Sargent is open to schools and clubs across the UK and taking part couldn't be easier. Teachers or club leaders simply register to take part and the charity will send them everything they need – right down to the footballs!

Whether they hold a penalty shoot-out competition, a mini-tournament or even a skills class like the one Lily, Polly and Stanley took part in at Chelsea, anything goes!

Last year, more than 130,000 children from across the UK took part in Kick for CLIC Sargent and helped to raise £180,000 for children with cancer. This year it is hoped that even more children will take part and help to make the event an even bigger success.

Every day in the UK 10 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia. By taking part in Kick for CLIC Sargent and supporting the charity, local schools and clubs can help to make a real difference to those children and their families.
