Swapping in-flight for fly-tipping

At 22 years of age, Vicky Cribb's already opted for a career change. She's swapped crossing the skies of Europe as an air hostess for helping the residents of Newbury as a neighbourhood warden.

Vicky Cribb's working life started as a flight attendant for BMI on planes bound for Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels.

But now the 22-year-old has swapped life at 35,000 feet for a job as a neighbourhood warden with a Newbury housing association.

"I've been interested in working with younger people and teenagers for some time, so this is perfect," she says.

"On the airline I was working four flights a day and unsociable hours, but the best thing about being a warden is no two days are the same.

"One minute I might be sorting out some fly-tipping, the next I might find myself arranging a community event for the children on one of the estates."

Feeling safer?

Vicky grew up in the area - she attended Newbury College - and joins ten other wardens on the Sovereign Housing Association team, based on the Nightingales estate.

The wardens look after estates in Newbury and also cover Thatcham, Holybrook, Tilehurst and Purley.

Vicky's the latest recruit in a scheme that's been running for four years.

"Residents have told us they feel safer," says warden manager Andy Cooch.

"They appreciate our efforts sorting out fly-tipping, abandoned cars, providing activities for children, and liaising with teenagers."
