Match Report
Pakistan v Essex
Date:09/06/03 Pakistan v Scotland
Venue:Chelmsford

Former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower hit his first century of the season as Essex beat tourists Pakistan by 50 runs in a day-night match.

Flower's unbeaten 115 helped a weakened Essex side post a total of 284 for six, the tourists could only respond with 234 all out in 46.1 overs. Graham Napier put the tourists on the back foot when he dismissed Imran Nazir and skipper Yousuf Youhana with successive deliveries in his third over. Hameed made the most of his escape by scoring 82 from 89 balls, an effort containing nine fours and which was ended by Joe Grant who had him caught in the covers.

After Hameed's departure, Essex were able to breathe much more easily as they celebrated a superb victory in their first match under newly-installed lights. Earlier, there was an encouraging innings for Essex's James Foster, who hit 56 off just 67 balls batting at three after the hosts won the toss. There were also two wickets for his opening partner Mohammad Sami and spinner Shoaib Malik, including Bopara after a brisk 46. Flower, who retired from international cricket after the World Cup, put on 90 with Foster for the second wicket and 95 with Ravinder Bopara for the fourth. He played patiently throughout before upping the tempo at the death to reach 115 not out from 128 balls with 11 fours.
