DVLA medical conditions list

Headlines have been referring to a list of 153 medical conditions you must declare, but we contacted the DVLA and it told us that there are actually 1,172 different conditions that it needs to be notified of.

The advice it has given is to always go direct to the DVLA website, external and check it's list of conditions.

In the specific case of eyesight, you must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away, which is about the length of 5 parked cars.

You must also have the visual acuity of around 6/12 on the Snellen chart - which means what a person with normal vision can read at 12 metres, you can only read at 6, but your Optometrist will tend check this whenever you go in for a sight test.

Generally, if you have cataracts, you will need to be checked more often, and usually you will be put on a sooner recall so we can keep an eye on this.
