Islanders fear tourists will bring in drugs
A series of workshops is being held on the Isles of Scilly, to try to raise awareness of drugs.

Organiser, the Isles of Scilly Community Safety Partnership, admits the remote islands have no specific drugs problem.

Only 2,000 people live in the five inhabited islands of the Scillies, which lie about 28 miles south-west from Land's End on the Cornish mainland.

And from 1998 to 2001, 173 criminal offences were recorded for the islands - none of them for drugs.

But the islands attract so many visitors and seasonal workers, its teenagers could well encounter illegal substances, says the partnership.

The partnership also says because its teenagers complete their education on the mainland, it is important they are able to make informed decisions about drugs.

The Home Office-funded workshops will be led by a specialist trainer from the UK.

They are intended to equip parents and youngsters with information about the effect of drugs, patterns of drug use as well as the legal implications.
