Police say they have issued over 20 warning notices during recent patrols

Off-road bikers are travelling from as far as Cornwall and northern England to ride illegally on Aberavon Beach.

Police say they have stopped scores of riders on the eight-mile stretch of sand near Port Talbot.

Officers have been surprised how far some have travelled and are warning them they have the power to confiscate their bikes if they are caught again.

It follows complaints from beach users and BP, which owns land including the dunes bordering part of the beach.

Aberavon Beach was awarded a Blue Flag in 2008 for the first time since the awards began after almost �4m was invested in cleaning the area and improving facilities.

Police have increased patrols in the area to try and stop bikers riding illegally off-road.

More than 20 Section 59 warnings have been issued to riders including people from Cornwall, Bolton and Ipswich.

If they are caught again police have the power to confiscate their bikes.

PC Ian Ranford said: "We have found riders who have travelled from across Britain to use the track at Aberavon Beach.

"Some of them are motocross champions who are competing in events across the world.

"The illegal use of motorbikes on this site is a cause of concern. As well as being a danger to people who regularly walk in the area, it will cause environmental damage to the site."
