Charity skydive for veteran, 79
Sidney Defriend
Mr Defriend had a leg amputated in an operation three years ago
A 79-year-old World War II veteran has completed a skydive from 16,000ft.

Sidney Defriend of Llandybie, west Wales, did the tandem parachute jump to raise money for the British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association (BLESMA).

Despite serving in Europe during WWII, the jump at Hinton near Oxford was the first time he had leapt from a plane.

Mr Defriend joined BLESMA three years ago after he had a leg amputated and his jump has raised over 1,700 for the south west Wales branch.

"It was tremendous - I've never experienced anything like it before," he said.

"I'm used to flying in planes but had never done a parachute jump although I was not a bit nervous.

"You just put your trust in the instructor and they are very experienced. They know what they are doing."

He said as well as raising money for BLESMA the jump was his own way of marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the war.

Mr Defriend, who fought in the Royal Scots Greys regiment, was joined by fellow branch member and amputee Anthony Williams.

The jump was orginally scheduled for 3 July but the flight was grounded by bad weather.
