Judgement reserved on Bluestone

A High Court judge has reserved his judgement at a hearing into the development of a 60m holiday village in Pembrokeshire.

Sitting in Swansea, Mr Justice Jack had heard arguments for and against the scheme which would include 340 timber lodges, a snow dome and a water park.

It has proved controversial because part of it falls in national park land.

Planning permission was granted in January but the Council for National Parks(CNP) challenged that decision.

The judge said he would issue a ruling at a later date at the end of the three-day hearing in Swansea. Lawyers for the CNP said the development on a 500 acre site at Canaston Bridge near Narberth was inappropriate for a national park.

Policies David Wolfe, for the CNP, also questioned the role of some councillors who had seats on both the county council and national park, which granted planning approval in January.

The CNP argued that park authority members disregarded their own policies and advice from officers when they unanimously voted for planning consent.

"We are simply saying that there is a real possibility subconsciously, that they did not approach the planning issue in an open way," said Mr Wolfe.

But during the hearing Patrick Clarkson QC , who acted for the park authority, called the allegation "very thin indeed."

He said that the decision to give planning permission reflected local opinion as a large number of local people had voiced support for Bluestone.

Bluestone developers say the project near Narberth would create 600 posts plus another 200 jobs for contractors and suppliers.

Lawyers for Bluestone argued the project would cause no substantial environmental damage.

They also said it would not set a precedent for other national parks as each planning application is dealt with on its merits.
