The race is suitable for riders of all ages |
Nearly 400 mountain bike enthusiasts from across the UK have entered a prestigious 10-hour endurance event in the Galloway forests. The so-called "Ten at Kirroughtree" on Saturday is one of a series of three races taking place across Scotland.
The first was held near Fort William in June, with the final ride planned for Moray in August.
The leading rider in all three events will win an all expenses paid trip to New Zealand.
Keith Muir, tourism manager for the Forestry Commission in Galloway, said he hoped the event would become an annual fixture.
He stressed that although some of the country's top mountain bikers would be taking part, the race will be suitable for riders of all ages and ability to take part.
Volunteer marshals
Mr Muir said: "It is for the family wanting to have a bit of fun up to the professional rider wanting to train and use the experience to build up his skill and fitness level.
"We have individuals in it and we have team involved so it literally is an event for all types of mountain bike rider."
The course is recognised as being one of the best in Scotland, but is not said to be technically difficult compared to many others.
Mr Muir said it would be important top ensure that villages in the surrounding area, especially Newton Stewart, benefited from the event.
An appeal has also gone out for volunteer marshals for this weekend's event. Anyone interested should contact the Forestry Commission offices in Newton Stewart on 01671 402 420.
