The chain said the cuts were necessary in order to survive |
At least 100 jobs are to go across the West Midlands region with the closure of nine Kwik Save supermarkets. Seven stores in the Black Country and one in Coventry will close on Wednesday while the firm's store in Wellington, Shropshire, shut on Tuesday.
It said it was closing 79 shops - more than a third of its stores across the UK - in order to survive.
"This is a huge number of closures which will affect many workers," said a spokesman for the union Usdaw.
'Difficult decision'
"We will be seeking an urgent meeting with the company to clarify what redundancy package workers can expect as well as discussing the long-term future of the business."
On Tuesday, customers turned up at the group's store in Wellington, Shropshire to find a note at the shop announcing its closure - 12 jobs have been lost at the site.
In the Black Country, the company is closing two stores in Tipton and one each in Blackheath, West Bromwich, Warley, Dudley and Wolverhampton.
In a statement, Kwik Save said it regretted the "difficult decision", but had been forced to "announce these cutbacks to secure the future of the business".
