Toxic algae closes reservoir
King's Mill Reservoir
The reservoir near Mansfield is full of algae
A reservoir in Nottinghamshire has closed to the public because of an infestation of poisonous algae.

Kings Mill Reservoir near Mansfield is a popular location for fishing, sailing and canoeing.

Ashfield District Council says recent tests have shown high levels of toxic blue-green algae in the water at the reservoir.

Chris Allen, environment protection manager at the council, says the algae can cause a range of health problems.

"There is a real risk of skin irritation to humans and dogs can also become ill from drinking the water," he said.

The council is monitoring the levels of algae in the reservoir on a weekly basis.

A council spokesman said the algae will probably die off in a few weeks time, but it is advising people to stay away from the water until further notice.
