The New Forest is famous for its wild ponies |
Motorists caught speeding on roads through the New Forest are having the dangers of driving too fast explained by local people. Drivers who break 40mph limits at two sites on Wednesday are being pulled over and given a choice of talking to a resident, or points and a fine.
On average, seven ponies are killed each month. Pigs, cows, sheep and donkeys are also often hit by vehicles.
Police say drivers are at serious risk of injury or death if they hit animals.
The crackdown, a joint operation between police, Hampshire County Council, the New Forest Verderers and local residents, is taking place on the B3078 Cadnam to Fordingbridge road and the C10 Picket Post to Burley road.
Both sites have high animal death rates, police say.
