Second homes tax rise
Homes
Adopting the proposals would raise an estimated 1.3m
People with second homes in north Cornwall will lose part of their council tax discount.

The vote by North Cornwall councillors means that from 1 April, the owners of second homes which are furnished and regularly used will have to pay 90% of the total council tax bill.

It is estimated that this will raise an extra 1.3m, with 170,000 going to the district council.

The county council would receive 1m.

The council estimates there are currently more than 3,500 second homes in the area.

Negotiations are currently under way with the county council to transfer some of their share of the money back to district councils for use with affordable housing.

The leader of Caradon District Council, Andrew Crawford, has said all the extra revenue should go to the district councils.

The move to increase council taxes on second homes follows a similar move taken by five councils in neighbouring Devon.
