A project has been launched for farmers to reintroduce bumblebees across more than one million hectares of land. Agricultural group Syngenta Centre of Environment Excellence in Whittlesford near Cambridge plans to bring them back onto a 1,000 farms.
The project across most of Cambridgeshire and the eastern counties will enable farmers to sow a special pollen seed that will help bees thrive.
Numbers have declined 70% in the last 20 years because of loss of habitat.
Lack of pollen
It will create a special habitat on farms where there is a lack of pollen.
Syngenta Environmental specialist Geoff Coates said: "For environmental features to achieve the best results they have to be proactively managed, just like any other crop.
"But it requires a whole new set of skills for farmers to learn.
"Experience with the pilot scheme of Operation Bumblebee revealed the crucial need for practical training."
The Syngenta Centre is a new environmental training facility for eastern county farmers.
