Amateur historians are being given a helping hand to trace their family tree at the touch of a button.

The Family History Archive can be accessed through Hull City Council's website.

It provides a one-stop-shop to various sources of genealogical information such as the city archives, the local studies library and Hull register office.

The resource also includes tips for beginners on tracing family history and how to get the most out of the library service.

City genealogist Gareth Watkins said: "The library service gets dozens of inquiries every week from people all over the world wanting to know where to find specific records of old Hull and its people.

"Previously people would have to be passed on to different places like city archives, the register office, crematorium or local studies library.

"Now anyone - no matter where they live - can find out what's available at the touch of a button."
