120 safe after Thames boat crash
News image
The accident happened 10 years after the Marchioness tragedy

About 100 partygoers and 20 crew have been safely evacuated after a pleasure boat struck a bridge on the River Thames.

An investigation is under way after the Symphony hit Lambeth Bridge in central London on Monday evening.

Scotland Yard said the wheelhouse of the boat hit an arch of the bridge.

It docked at Lambeth pier and everybody on board was evacuated.

The Marine Accident Investigation Board is trying to establish the cause of the crash.

"The government takes the safety of boats on the River Thames very seriously," said a spokesman for the Department of Transport.

The accident comes just weeks after the government announced a public inquiry into safety on the River Thames, prompted by the Marchioness disaster 10 years ago.

Fifty-one people died when the pleasure boat sank after a collision with the dredger Bowbelle on 20 August 1989.

The review is expected to produce an interim report by the end of the year, with recommendations made within 18 months.
