Legally Blonde heads for Broadway
Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde
Legally Blonde was a surprise success at the box office in 2001
Hit film Legally Blonde, which starred Reese Witherspoon as a blonde sorority queen at Harvard Law School, is to be made into a stage musical.

It will join a string of hit movies to make it to the stage, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Full Monty.

Tony award-nominated Jerry Mitchell will direct and choreograph the stage version, film studio MGM said.

The musical is expected to be finished by spring 2005, and hit theatres later the same year.

Sequel

Mr Mitchell earned a Tony nomination this year for his work on Never Gonna Dance. His work also includes stage hits like Hairspray and The Full Monty.

Screenwriter Heather Hach, who worked on the recent film remake of Freaky Friday, will write the script, while the songs will be by Larry O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin.

Legally Blonde, with Witherspoon in the lead role as pink-loving Elle, was a surprise cinema success in summer 2001.

It earned $96m (52.6m) at US and Canadian box offices.

Witherspoon reprised the role for the sequel, Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde, in 2003.
