Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been formally charged with culpable homicide.

He allegedly hit five homeless people with his car late at night on 28 September, killing one of them.

Mr Khan, who is famed for his tough guy roles in Indian blockbusters, is accused of driving drunk, rashly and without a licence.

Magistrate Shayam Sisode rejected his bail plea - the fourth since his arrest two weeks ago.

The court allowed Mr Khan a 15 minute meeting with his father, mother and stepmother before he was taken back to Thane Central Jail after Monday's hearing.

Mr Khan handed himself over to police less then 12 hours after the incident involving a Toyota Landcruiser.

It is alleged the actor was drunk when the accident happened. He has denied allegations that he was driving the vehicle.

Police say the car does not belong to the film star, but have been unable to trace its owner so far.

Public outcry

Indian police originally arrested Mr Khan on charges of negligent driving and released him on bail. He was re-arrested after a public outcry.

Mr Khan, who has played action heroes and romantic leads in 20 Hindi-language blockbuster movies, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

At an earlier hearing, he was ordered to pay damages of a million rupees to relatives of the dead and the injured victims.

Judges in India have the authority to grant such relief since court cases can take years to settle.

The actor is already fighting a case in which he was charged with shooting a deer in a wildlife reserve in western India in 1998.

He could face seven years in prison if convicted of that offence.
