Diana memorial unveiled
The plaque to commemorate Princess Diana
Earl Spencer gets his first look at the winning design
A plaque to commemorate Princess Diana has been unveiled by her brother at Northampton's Guildhall.

The 4,000 bronze plaque has been designed by two students who won a competition organised by Northampton Borough Council.

Princess Diana, whose family home and burial place is at Althorp in Northamptonshire, was made an honorary Freeman of the Borough in 1989.

The plaque, designed by Clare Barber and Fay Rook, took three weeks to cast at a specialist fine art foundry.

Abstract design

It was described by the councillor overseeing the project, Terry Wire, as an abstract design which would allow viewers their own interpretation.

"The plaque is highly imaginative, striking, and captures Princess Diana's vibrant nature," he said.

Earl Spencer said: "I know that we, as a family, are deeply proud of what she did during her lifetime and also the work that continues.

"What the family wanted was not necessarily to have Diana's image there but to have something that represented her global impact.

"This is something that has been carried off very well by the two designers."
